Are the 6.0 PSD really that bad?

I am looking at buying a 05 f250 with the 6.0 PSD in it, for a work truck, and I read every where that the 6.0 PSD is crap, are they really that bad?

I don't tow alot of weight a max of 5000lbs every once in while so it's hardly going to be working to it's max.

They are hit and miss, but any brand has its marks. I dumped my 06 dodge after it blew the injector pump apart internally, before was a crazy power surge we(dealer and I) couldnt find. it goes back to that old rule the people with a ba one will tell the word the people with a good one barely tell anyone.

They worked out most of the problems by 05. I wouldn't buy an older one than that with the 6.0. I bought my 05 new and it came home with an oil leak. My buddy bought one the same day and had the same problem. I put the Edge with Attitude system in, air intake and Banks dual exhaust. I also had to put a Banks intercooler in after I blew up the stock one.

But other than that.... It's fine..:D

I have an 04 with approx 72,000 on it and it is always towing about 7000 lbs. I havent had any issues as of yet(knock on wood, I sure as hell hope I didnt just jinx myself:D ) Like everyone said, every make and model you will horror stories about

I'm on my second. And have had no problems . 45k a year and all I do is oil changes . Tows great . Go for it .

Jassman 05-25-2007 05:29 AM

I have had 9 of them since 03, never had a problem. When you buy used, and they have a problem it is more than likely it's been modded. There is the right and wrong aftermarket products to put on these trucks. Many cause to high cylinder pressure that causes high boost, and failure from there. Transmissions blow, to improper modules that have no tranny control. The list goes on. Jeff

Thats what I thought, I plan on leaving it stock, I already have a 600hp car and I don't need that in a 3 tonne truck...

the truck is stock and has been fleet maintained (with records) drives really well, I think I just pull the trigger and do it.

I have an 03 with well over 90,000,mostly towing boats. Only problem was an egr valve at around 89,000 miles. No chip though, I'd like one but afraid of the problems. I might do something with the exhaust soon. I think that might help fuel mileage. I get from 17 to 19 not towing and 12 to 15 towing depending on weight. Not many cars pull away from me at a red light, even when I have a boat behind me.

CigDaze 05-25-2007 07:39 AM

No worries with an '05. Go for it.
I love mine, never had any problems.

Had an '06 F-350 King Ranch w/ the 6.0L motor - completely stock. Began to overheat when towing my boat up hills at 26,000 miles.

After three trips to dealers (one dealer told me to pick up my truck - he wasn't going to fix it because I questioned his replacing the coolant overflow cap as the only thing wrong with the truck), finally got them to check the heads. They were warped and had to be replaced, along with the gaskets. Broke down 1 week after I got it back. Replaced 2 injectors. Broke down again. Replaced all injectors. Broke down again. Replaced all injectors again. Broke down again. Truck spent 72 days in the shop from August 2006 to December 2006, when Ford agreed to take it back and give me an '08.

I'm not saying this is a common occurence; there are many 6.0L's out there that run great. When my truck wasn't broken, it ran great. If you get a good one, you should have no problem towing 5,000 lbs.

I have 59K on my 04 now. I love it. I still have 41K on warranty. I normally get a new one every 5 years, but this is a good truck and don't know that I will.

otis311 05-25-2007 02:03 PM

I have an 07 with 12k with no issues as of yet

waterboy222 05-25-2007 02:50 PM

06 with 45k in one year.. i haul 2300lbs in the bed almost daily. the only thing ive had to replace is the overload spring rubber pads because they wore out from being overloaded. I put a sct controller, 5" exhaust, k&N and intake and still no issues.. the only trip to the dealer was to replace a vaccum line that the oil changer disconnected. it kept my defroster from switching to the vents in A/C mode..

Magic Medicine 05-25-2007 07:24 PM

I really like mine.

ratman 05-25-2007 07:56 PM

i talk a lot with brian of brians truck shop, the 6.0 wont handle power mods like the 7.3 will. he built a 7.3 for his son to race the 1/4 mile with egts are 1800+ at the end of the run. he's making 100+ lbs of boost with a twin turbo set up he builds. the 7.3s are hard to hurt:D i put a dp tuner chip on mine with a holstet h2e turbo and mbrp exhaust it runs like a scalded cat, never had another truck pass me... yet

BillR 05-26-2007 08:05 AM

an '05 w/ 41K. No problems. One of the best vehicle I've ever owned.
Go for it - you'll love it. Problems gone by MY '05.

Zudnic 05-26-2007 01:17 PM

04 Excursion.... I'm hard on it, drive lots of miles per year, in fact probably have the highest od reading on this site. I love it, and had the seven before; this thing is just as good stock!

Somehow a valve thingy got disconnected and she runs better for some reason. Recent issue; have one of those coolers with extra cooling fan, plug into cig socket. Left it plugged in for a day and a half, killed batts. Re-charged battery, started up Excursion. The compass gas mileage deal went dark, then climate control and finally everything on dash. Picking up tuesday, last time this happened dealer said lose ground wire fixed in 2 hrs, dif dealer over a week......For my mile's on it this is a minor issue................ I've decided to keep it and this will the second time since I've had my license that kept a vehicle more then two years..

Chipster27 05-27-2007 06:36 AM

I have an '05 and am the original owner. I've modded it with the following:
Banks PowerPDA
Exhaust, six gun, and intercooler.

I've had a couple problems, but they were covered under warranty. Oil leak (rear seal if I remember right), and last month I had a VGT valve go bad so the dealer warrantied the valve and a new turbo.

It's a weekend truck for me and it's primary use it to pull my toyhauler (10k lbs) and my boat. It does a fantastic job of both. I have 21k miles on it and have been happy with it.

I'd also recommend sending a sample of your oil after each oil change to Blackstone labs. They check the oil for signs of wear, coolant and a number of other things. I've done it three times and each time the tests come back with good results. The tests are $20 each and to me they are assurance that the motor is healthy. When I go to sell the truck the buyer will have confidence that the motor is strong, has a solid history and has been maintained.

I'd buy another one, but I also know people that have had problems with theirs too... I think by '05 they had most of the issues worked out.
