GM Offers Diesel V -8 in Some '10 Trucks (4.5 Liter)

DETROIT – General Motors plans to install a new turbocharged diesel V-8 engine in light-duty pickups and at least one SUV, the Hummer H2, in 2010.

On Friday, GM powertrain boss Tom Stephens revealed that the engine has a 4.5-liter displacement and fits in the same space as GM's gasoline small block V-8. It develops 310 hp and 520 pounds-feet of torque. GM will use urea injection to control emissions of oxides of nitrogen. GM says the engine will deliver a 25 percent boost in fuel economy over the gasoline small block V-8.

GM Invests $100 Million In New York Plant

GM recently announced it will invest $100 million in its Tonawanda engine plant to produce an all-new, 4.5-liter V-8 Duramax high-output diesel engine for the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra light-duty pickup trucks and the HUMMER H2. The engine fuel efficiency improves by 25 percent compared to gasoline engines. Environmental benefits of the new engine include a 13 percent reduction in CO2 versus gasoline engines, and at least a 90 percent reduction in particulates and NOx when compared to diesel vehicles today.
The investment includes a 200,000-square-foot facility renovation, new machinery, equipment and special tooling to bring diesel engine technology to New York. In addition to the $100 million facility investment, GM will invest an additional $41 million for vendor tooling, containers and investments at other locations necessary to support the Tonawanda operations. Construction is slated to begin later this year and production of the new diesel engine is scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2009.
“GM is transforming its product portfolio to reduce fuel consumption and emissions, and the 4.5-liter V-8 diesel is an integral part of that transformation, as well as a component of GM’s strategy to diversify vehicle energy sources,” said John Buttermore, GM Powertrain vice president of global manufacturing.
The investment is in addition to a $300 million investment GM announced in January for production of an all-new, DOHC V-8 engine to power GM’s luxury cars and SUVs. Production of that engine also begins in 2009.

so, what is the bigger 6.6l duramax going to be in 2010?

Hard to say......It was that long ago the 6.6 was making 520 ft/lbs of torque. (2003). It will be interesting to see how the EPA deals with the urea injection issue.

yeah that's true. It seems to me that Diesel is the way of the future so they should favor car makers who produce them because for their size they are much more efficient than gas engines, less maintnence, longer lasting, and pollute less.

I am not sure if it still true but about 4 years ago there were 5 states that you could not sell a new diesel passenger car. You could buy used and you could buy diesel powered trucks, but no new diesel powered passenger vehicles. They were the pretty environmentally active states like California and Massachusetts their combined market share was almost 25% of the car market. The other scary thing is that to meet EPA regulations the fuel economy has been dropping in the OTR trucks just to be 50 states legal, I have heard they have dropped 1-2 MPG and that sucks when you were only getting 7-8 best case!!
