A 1 ton seems pretty unanimous. The only question is Dually vs. SRW. That answer seems to hinge on how much and how far you tow.
DWR seems safer in general but kind of awkward for the other 300 days of the year. Is there a rule of thumb that makes SWR acceptable on the interstate? It would be VERY interesting to hear from those of you who have used both.

A 1 ton dually diesel is the best way to go. As far as a daily driver, I use the daully for that as well. I like being above the average vehicle, and when your going up and down 95 through Baltimore everyday, the 1 ton in a persons rearview mirror is all thats necessary for them to move over and get out of the way. Been driving it for so long that I can get it in places that most people shake their heads at. Just my .02

I have a friend that we do poker runs with he uses a 1 ton dually Chevy 4X4 w/ 8.1 his boat is a '03 382 with a steel Myco pulls the boat awesome but it doesn't pass a gas station.
We have another friend who has a '99 Dodge ext. cab long box w/v10 4X4, his boat is a '99 Hustler 388 slingshot approx 1000lbs lighter but we have used both trucks with the 382. Both pull good but the dually is a little more stable. What dually uses in width with the extra set of wheels the Dodge makes up in length at least that is their theory. The dually sucks for anything else although (daily driving no load). The Dodge you can't park any where (daily driving no load).
If it were me with this decision I would probably go with a 1 ton dually w/duramax and the allison tranny. And get something else to drive daily.
That my .02 for what ever thats worth.
