Default diesel or gas 08 f250.

Im thinking of tradeing in my 06 f250 for a 08 with a gas eng. I dont tow that much anymore because the boat is on the lift. But still a poker run once a month or so. gas $3.01 dsl. $3.35 a gal. I drive 250 miles a week. maint. on a diesel is stupid. compaired to a gas eng.

Diesel used to be a good deal, up to .30 per gallon less than gasoline and 50% better mileage. This week, diesel was .50 per gallon more than gasoline at the pumps here in Toledo. Still a better deal for pulling a big load though.

If you plan on keeping the truck long, keep the diesel. As far as power, your not going to touch the diesel. What kind of maint issues are you upset with on your 6.0? Gas engine has 1/2 the life before a major overhaul is expected. Are you saving money if you loose money on your trade in? Or maybe your truck is paid for. .35 per gallon over. If your truck is a single rear wheel diesel I would guess you get 16-18mpg, the gas should get what 13-14? Traveling 250 miles per week your still better by about $1 for the diesel.

There are several threads here in the truck/trailer forum with info on the diesel vs. gas debate.

dreamboater is right on the money. You really need to put at least 100,000 miles on a diesel to get your money's worth dollar for dollar vs. gas, NOT taking anything else into account.

However, towing a Velocity 390 (in your profile), on a trailer, full of fuel, is at least 11,000 maybe 12,000 lbs. right? A diesel is going to have a LOT easier time pulling such vs. a gas anything.

I had an 8.1L 496 GM for several years, and now tow with a PSD Ford. I had exhaust, chips, intake, and a few other goodies, on a relatively light truck. The 8.1L 496 GM was stronger than the V-10 Ford as well. There is NO comparison; diesel is a clear and concise winner.

Ideal scenario is pop for a slightly used truck (diesel), and save at least $5-8K; and go buy yourself a nice daily driver to put gas in, and save some money in the long run as well.

See this thread, and see if you can find this article/magazine...

VERY informative.

I haven't heard anybody getting that kind of crappy mpg from a 6.4 I consider my 6.0L a mileage dog at 15-16.

Go with the diesel. Pulling is no comparison to a gas job. To bad Ford replaced the 7.3, I'm getting 19.5 on the highway and 13-14 pulling our Fountain 10 mt or our 33' fifth wheel.
