Why never to buy a FORD!!!

Okay here is my rant...I am a huge GM Man so this is just fuel for my fire! My wife has a Ford Explorer Limited that she bought before we were married. I got a recall letter from ford stating their is a problem with the Cruise control causing fires. I took it in last July 07' and they unplugged it stating the part would be avaliable in august. Since they uplugged it the Cruise, Anti Locks do not work!!!! Well I just called Ford and they said the parts are still back ordered until June of 08' That is Customer Satisfaction!!!!!

Update: January 17, 2008

Cars:

Parts for the cruise control switch recall will be available sometime in February 2008. Affected customers will receive a postcard from recall headquarters instructing them to make an appointment with their dealer to have the recall completed.
Trucks:

Parts for the cruise control switch recall will be available in the second quarter, 2008.Affected customers will receive a postcard when parts are available from recallheadquarters instructing them to make an appointment with their dealer to have the recallcompleted.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ford is conducting a voluntary safety recall involving speed control deactivation switch systems in 3.6 million vehicles.

I too own an Explorer and have purposely not taken it in for the cruise recall, I am hoping it catches fire and burns in my driveway.

hunster 02-27-2008 08:47 AM

All they do is unplug the cruise @ the module under the hood. Had the same issue with my expy. Watched the tech unplug the cruise harness and tape the plug. In a month or so they called me with the parts in. They just replaced the connector on the plug.

Chris Sunkin 02-27-2008 10:16 AM

And GM never has problems like this? Uh huh.

29KILROY 02-27-2008 10:23 AM

I never said they didn't, I am just speaking about this issue and how it is being handled. Almost a year to fix a recall is crazy! Do a search on the net and wait until you see the list...Ford by far has the most recalls!

Tow-N-One 02-27-2008 10:35 AM

All manufacturers have recalls, but this seems more like a parts issue. I will say this, when GM issues a recall, all there duck are in a row as far as customer notification/parts availability.:hitfan:

Edward R. Cozzi 02-27-2008 10:40 AM

A recall tells me the manufacturer is interested in customer safety and satisfaction no matter what brand it is.

I'm surprised they would handle it like you describe.

czy40p 02-27-2008 10:46 AM

Recalls tell me the NHTSA is about whack them over the head if they do not do something now.

sleeper_dave 02-27-2008 11:00 AM

I took my navigator in for other work, and they did the recall. Disabling my cruise control. I plugged it back in in the parking lot before I left the dealership.

They got the parts in a few months later and fixed it.

The problem is a bad switch in the master cylinder that cracks and shorts out with the brake fluid, causing a fire. The fix is to add a fuse inline with the switch so that if it shorts out, the fuse will blow before enough heat is generated to cause a fire.

The last (and I mean last) GM truck I had I replaced every major part at least TWICE and many parts 3 times. As you can expect, customer service was much as your experience with Ford only over a much longer period with many more than just a few problems. Since then I have had 3 Fords. In contrast, they have been an absolute pleasure!
Name a part, and I'll tell you the story!:party-smiley-004:

Actually, in the last 10 years (1999-2008)GM had 1124 recalls, and Ford had 718 (including all brands by both makes).
:eureka:

The data is available from National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/

GM makes more vehicles also

CigDaze 02-27-2008 02:05 PM

Regardless, the statement was: "Ford by far has the most recalls."
And that is an incorrect statement.

You sound like you work for them or something.....

29KILROY 02-27-2008 02:40 PM

I did a search this am on Yahoo and a page came up with all recalls, that's what I based it on. I am trying to find which one in my history. Anyway it shouldn't take this long......

Oh ya, there's this:
:D

Consumer Reports polls buyers about the reliability of their 1998-2007 vehicles.

Associated Press
Published October 17, 2007
.
.
.
Forty-one of 44 Ford, Lincoln and Mercury models - or 93 percent - scored average or better in predicted reliability, compared with 67 percent of Chrysler LLC's models and 49 percent of General Motors Corp.'s models...

hunster 02-27-2008 02:51 PM

Actually I'd rather have the cruise disabled on my ford than the unwanted abs activation on my chevy. GM did recall the chevy for that but the dealer isn't too happy about doing the work for me.

txriverrat2001 02-27-2008 03:12 PM

Yo boss!! Shoot me your VIN via PM or email - I have a fellow boater who's a Parts Director at a L/M store and he has them on the shelf.

I'll ship you one and you can take it to the dealer and have them knock it out....

I can't say anything about GM - but being that I've worked for/with Ford dealerships for 17yrs, then switched to Mercedes - Mercedes has their chit together when comes down to a recall. I came in one morning and found 30 something airbags included with my daily stock order - I thought WTF? did I do now..... being a Mercedes newbie and all....

Come to find out they pre-shipped all the parts for the vehicles we sold on a recall being sent out later that week.... wow.

Ford NEVER did that in the 17yrs I was associated with them.....

Do I drive one?? Hell Yeal ... MB hasn't come up with a truck to pulls 9500lbs ...... yet.

jafo 02-27-2008 06:58 PM

I used to be a GM fan too- drew a paycheck from them in the 1970's. I drive a late-model Bonneville and it has been a good car, and am a huge old GTO fan- have two.
I owned 3 of their trucks including Suburbans through the late 80's and 90's and all them were junk. Switching to Ford in the year 2000 and after was a breath of fresh air when it came real trucks- the duallies and Excursion diesels owned have been nearly flawless.
As far as recalls go, all mfg's have them and deal with them in the best manner for one huge reason- to avoid lawsuits.
GM has a monster looming in its future once it figures out why some of their 2007-2008 Tahoes and Suburbans have self-ignited and burned to the ground. They're trying like hell right now to keep it quiet, but it will be 'news at eleven' before long.

happy hours 02-27-2008 07:48 PM

I do, I have one and it is at the ramp at least once a week. :-)

NO a recall is a way the manufacturer covers their ass because they don't want to get sued when the firestone's on their suvs explode or their cruise control blows up in your face.

Airpacker 02-28-2008 01:49 PM

From what I have been told by a few insiders, recalls not mandated by the nhtsa are considered only once the $$ total of possible lawsuits is higher than the cost in $$ of recalling the vehicles.

PS, most recalls in the last 10 years are due to the big guys demanding severe price reductions from their suppliers and that only means one thing. Quality of product goes down dramatically.

Prime example. Ford recalls a few milion Tauruses and Windstars to replace door locks. The locks seize because Ford demanded a 3 cent per lock reduction in cost. That 3 cents came from the cost of plating the lock bodies. Now the rust out in 3 to 4 years and sometimes they don't latch. So, 3 cents saved per lock = 12 cents per car but now costs approximately $100.00 per car to fix. Good math huh? Same goes for wiring and circuit boards and suspension parts and on and on.

funny you mention this.... a couple weeks back I was a junkyard dog for a couple days looking for Cherokee parts, in EVERY yard I went was a completely toasted '07 Tahoe... and I mean thoroughly toasted.....

My girlfriend had to use the Lemon law for her Escape. Mainly rotor issues.
She had to go thru alot of paerwork and a arribitration hearing thru the BBB, but they are now going to replace her 07 with a new 08 at no charge (invoice to invoice).
She has almost 30k miles on it. So shes happy now with Ford.

happy hours 02-28-2008 08:03 PM

Yup, I even use my cruise control on the way there. :-)

I went through this process on my daughters Mustang. We traded junk for another piece of junk. Ever since no more Fords.
