Trans Band Adjustment

Any Dodge techs here on the board? I'm looking to adjust the transmision bands on my 2004 2500 diesel. Any special tools needed? Any info would greatly be appreciated.

Thanks Nordic95

Granted I am going off from when I did this to my Dakota years ago and I'm going to assume its similar, but I think the main tool you will need is a dial-type torque wrench.

I have an inch pound dial torque wrench but I also need the procedure on how and what to do.

Thanks Nordic95

I was in the automatic trans business until 1982 and most if not all bands you tighten until tight and back off just enough to give a little play, you want to squeeze the band about 1/8 inch.

The front band (2nd gear) which has the adjuster sticking thru the case partway up the side on drivers side-back jam nut off while holding center adjuster from turning, tighten center adjuster (I think its a torq 40) in snug hard (about 7-10 ft lbs) then back it out 2 to 2 1/2 turns, lock down jam nut to about 25-30 ft lbs (in the vehicle I use a typical length box wrench and give it a good pull). The rear band-(reverse), (you have to drop the pan),back jam nut off, tighten the center adjuster (8 mm) to 7-10 ft lbs (hard snug by hand),back off 3 1/2 turns, lock down the jam nut. The procedure is the same for 46re/518 gas transmissions EXCEPT rear band is a single wrap not a double wrap so you only back adjuster off 2 -2 1/2 turns. These adjustments aren't super critical but before you bolt pan back on pull on the rear servo lever and make sure its moving at least 1/4 inch, turn the driveshaft back and forth while watching the second drum and reverse drum to ensure they are rotating without drag,Smitty
