5th wheels are greased because they bear a much heavier load. On a ball, tongue weight is about 10& of the total trailer weight. On a 5th wheel, it can be 50%
For me, no grease on the ball. I'd rather replace a ball than deal with grease all over everything. I have enough problems with the dents in my shins from whacking into it already- grease would add insult to injury. |
I run mine dry , and when we used to grease them we had ground problems :cool-smiley-011:

A little bit goes a long way.
I put just a very small amount on the top of the ball when I'm hooking up and I clean it off completely on the ball and in the coupler when I disconnect. No question that it will prolong the life of the ball and coupler. |
I usually put a little on and then I wash it out of my pant leg later.

I keep a 2 & 5/16's ball cover right inside the tailgate hanging on the cargo hook. Its always close when I unhitch the trailer.
I get more grease on me from the sides of the surge break coupler than the ball. |
I just spit on it and ease it in :cool-smiley-027:.
Enough serious replies. |
