My brother in law works in the parts dept at the local Ford dealer. He's checking prices for me as well - not really what I wanted to spend my boat gas budget on, but if I can't make it to the water.....

Looks like between $2500 - $3200 to go with a Motorcraft trans/converter/new cooler/etc.. Apparently, the stock replacement transmissions have been improved since the original, which I got 180k out of. The stage 2, is a heavy duty version - would it be worth an extra $700?

the BTS transmissions are around 4k, but you can not blow them up. After you get the transmission I would get a Ford 6.0 transmission cooler and put it on. Alot of info on this at dieselstop.com.

I've heard that about the cooler from a lot of people - just have to fab up some new mounts.

from what I under stand it mounts in the exact same place and bolts up perfect. its about twice the size. i believe the only thing you have to do is use adapter fittings to go from the size hose on the 6.0 cooler to the lines on the 7.3 because they are not the same. You can find the 6.0 tranny coolers on ebay and even call your local salvage yard.

I'm going to have the electrical systems checked out next week - make sure everything is good before I do the transmission. Still torn between the stock replacement Motorcraft (which apparently has been reworked from what was put out in 99), or their stage 2. My stock trans went 180k with no problems, and I only put about 10k miles on the truck a year now - mainly towing. Is the stage 2 worth an extra $600?

I've got a 2000 Excursion with over 400k on the original Tranny. Only have used AMSOIL ATF in it, pretty much since day 1. I've only had to have the fluid changed about every 50k

Jasper supposedly makes an upgraded version. Approx. $3300 installed with a nation wide warranty 3yr 100k miles.

I guess a question that should be asked is how long you intend to keep the truck? If you're going to be one like myself who intends to run his 7.3-equipped truck to a dirt nap, I'd spend the extra $800 +/- and get a BTS. They're close to you in proximity, and if you can still drive it over to them (with an appointment made), they can have you in and out in about a day. Everyone that has one swears by not only the product but the support as well. I have already made up my mind that when I need mine rebuilt, they get my business.
