GM Techs: 2016 5.3 liter AFM issues
How wide spread is collapsed lifters? Do you see this regularly at your dealerships and what is the standard repair?
Truck is 13 months old, 26K miles and got a loud ticking in the motor yesterday. Noticed it at a drive thru and coincidentally was near a dealership (3/4 mile away). On the way there the truck had no power but no CEL's either. Service writer put me in a new 2018 Silverado and I was out the door in 45 minutes. Internet is full of horror stories but I just want to know how common is the issue is and is the fix a permanent solution or just a band aid until the warranty runs out! Anything specific I should look for or ask about?
Note the 2016's have a shorter powertrain warranty also (60K miles vs. the former 100K).

AFM has been hard on the special lifters for a while now, they did release a updated lifter a while back but I would think yours would have that, not changing the oil(don't go by oil life display) and the cycling of the AFM ib and outare biggest reasons to fail I'm told. I have a 5.3 and a 6.2(which killed a lifter) but I used superchips tuner and turned the AFM off(saw no loss in MPG) Not sure why yours failed that soon, have not heard of many low mileage failures.

Collapsed piston was the service writer's exact words........notice I put ?!?!?! after it when I typed it above as it didn't make sense to me either. No smoke, no CEL just a loud ticking and no HP when you pushed the pedal.

Truck is done.....
Service writer was confused at best. I talked with the guy who did the work instead:
#4 lifter collapsed (google search called it correct as that is an issue on the 5.3)
Replaced all lifters (both on both sides), inspected pistons/wrist pins
Pulled oil pan, replaced oil pump, new oil/filter.
Mechanic said he hadn't seen one fail with so little miles (26K).
So now the question is, just pound miles on it or trade it before the warranty expires?

I am spoiled by an awesome F250 Super Duty which is a beast, but regardless, I would immediately dispose of any vehicle that required internal engine work in the first 26k miles. But that's just me, I want a lot more reliability for my money. Imagine what lies ahead at 50k, 75k, 100k.

I agree......I have never had a vehicle that needed any type of internal engine work even with 100-150K miles on them. GM also cut the powertrain warranty from 100K to 60K starting in 2016. Service writer estimated this was a 5K job..... I asked: 5K for just changing lifters? He back peddled a bit and basically said he wasn't sure what it would cost.
