Performance upgrades for F-350

I have and 04 F-350 with a 6.0 diesel. Currently I get about 12 mpg and doesn't change much from pulling 12K lbs or not. I'd like to try to get more mpg and would like to get everyones experiences and opinions.

Im sure that all those would help. Do you have any real life examples? Cost is a concern. If i spend many thousands on upgrades and gain only a couple mpg it can take alot of fuel to payfor the upgrades. Upgrades don't make sence unless they can save $$$ in the long run.

I don't have a ford, im really suprised thats all your getting. the people I know with the fords are getting around 16. Do you have big rubber on it? is it 4 wheel drive? I went to dodge a few years ago, my 04 dually gets 18.5 to 19.5 around town. If it were my truck,I would put a flow through muffler on it, and a performance chip and that should help alot.

I have an 08 Chevy 2500 and am contemplating those upgrades but am nervous about the warranty nazis comming after me if their is a problem with something.

scottmori 09-14-2008 05:00 PM

i had 2 f-350 srw 6.0 trucks something is not right with your truck.you should have you injectors and egr checked.i got 18 mpg empty on highway at 75mph ang 16 around twn in my 04 and about 1 mpg less in my 05 king ranch.if you do anything get exhuast and a sct programer. also check out www.thedieselgarage.com
scott
ps get a cummins and get 21-22mpg thats what i did

Quicksilver 09-14-2008 07:09 PM

Something is wrong with your 6.0 if thats all your getting stock and unloaded, unless you live in a seriously hilly area with constant stop and go and on the gas hard.

If its a F-350 crew cab long bed dually, 4x4, with a bug deflector, a cap, and a windshield faring; that could easily cost 6 MPG...
...not to mention lift, tire size, axle ratio, and what might be in the bed on a daily basis.

WAY too many variables; which is why MPG numbers are all over the place on big trucks.

Switch all your fluids to synthetics. I and some friends also use AMSOIL 10w-40 High Performance Motor Oil, ATF and Gear Lubes along with their fuel additives and have typically picked up about 10% in fuel economy.

06 Ford F350 Dually 4x4 SWB with a 6.0 and WITH turbo back 4" exhaust, Airaid air box and an Edge/with Attitude programmer, synthetic fluids and a new egr valve, with Brentz Wheels and 34.5" tall Michelin 14 ply commercial tires still gets 12.3 mpg in town and as long as I keep rpms below 2000 on the highway I get 16 to 17 mpg, now with 12000 lbs of boat and trailer I get 11 mpg average,,,,the kicker is that the truck has 4:30 gears(it was part of the Tow Boss package from Ford) .

ZBODaytona 09-15-2008 10:12 AM

I have an 05 cc dually long bed with the tow boss package. During my trip 250 mile trip south this weekend I got around15.5 running 80. I have SCT programer running the extreme street..have 4 inch straight pipe exhaust, new intake elbow and new upgraded intercooler. Then I ran a short trip through the woods and got around 16+ running slower. But at 80 my truck is turning around 2500.
Slick I would like to see a picture of your truck. I have an 05 that is about to need new rubber. Did you lift the truck to clear that.

MILD THUNDER 09-15-2008 10:43 AM

My 04 6.0 crew cab srw gets about 16-18 on the highway empty. Towing, around 10-12. Wind seems to have quite a effect on these trucks. I have turbo back silverline exhaust, with no cat. Sounds cool, but dont think it did a lot for mpg.

Without seriously messing with your truck thats really about it, and the cheapest place to start. You will spend about a grand on all that stuff if you shop carefully. Maybe get 4 or 5 more MPG....maybe.

I used a two and a half inch leveling kit on the front with Brentz Classic wheels that were 19.5x6.75 and Michelin 265/70r19.5 XDE 2s (a pricey modification but has been well worth it to me)with no clearance issues whatsoever, I had tried a set of 22.5s with adapters and pretty much decided that that was a giant waste of money(do a thread search)

ZBODaytona 09-17-2008 09:33 AM

Looks good. I know I don't want the 22.5.... Thanks for the pictures, he has some wheels i really like, just waiting till the tires i have are gone before i get new ones. I am pretty sure I want to go that route...just have to save the money for them, in the middle of a kitchen remodel, finish that then get the new stuff.

40magnum 09-17-2008 02:36 PM

I have never seen a 6.0 get over 14
mine is a 06 f350 drw auto 4:10 rear 4x4 5" straight pipe sct tuner, drive it like a sports car and get 10mpg in town, 12mpg on highway empty ( 90mph) 9 mpg towing 15000 lbs (80 mph)
my 05 was the same, 05 blew head gaskets at 25000 mile
06 has 80000 still trying to blow it up, dealer never says a thing about tuner, in fack i took my salesman for a ride with it turned up so he could see how it was intended to run.
the 08 have no power and even worse gas milage

Well going 90 in a diesel will give you crap mileage what do expect lol. Your pushing a brick through the air.

Thanks, I like it alot and it gets attention everywhere it goes, if you want to see it in real life let me know, I live just outside of Apopka, and have a shop in downtown Orlando on OBT.

ZBODaytona 09-18-2008 09:20 AM

Well we aren't far from each other at all. Maybe one day we can meet up for a beer or something. My wife used to work at froggers in Apopka, now she moved closer to home to the new one in Mt. Dora.. Though I do go that way to see my sis, she lives over near downtown.

Slick02 09-18-2008 12:47 PM

Let me know,,,the truck sits at Nix & Black Automotive on OBT most of the time(unless I'm using it). I probably drive it once a week to keep the batteries up.

Hot Knots 10-14-2008 11:21 PM

I agree with scottmori...swap for the Cummins.
