Jaguar X-Type
My wife is in need of a new car. A friend is selling their 2002 Jag X-Type AWD 3.0, auto trans. The car is very clean, orig owner, no hits/damage 70k miles. He's offered it to us for 6k
Is this a decent car? My wife will commute to work with it, 60 miles/day. Thanks in advance, Kurt |

Kurt, when I was looking at S-Types and X-Types, I was told by a Jaguar mechanic to only get a 2003 or newer.
The S-Type and the X-Type share quite a few parts, and the S-Type went through a complete mechanical redesign/makeover in 2003, and the X-Type benefited from this technology. Namely, the transmission in those cars take a beating; and the newer the better. That does sounds like a pretty nice car at a pretty good deal, but just keep your eye on the transmission. (I did not purchase a Jag in the end.) |
transmissions were a problem with these cars as far as I have heard as well, sold a few of them used and I think two had tranny problems, one covered by jaguar, the other was not. does sound like a good deal, especially if the car was already serviced regarding the trans.

Thanks for the replies. Even though it seems like a good deal at 6k, I'm not into having to spend 7k for a trans fix down the road.

I do love the Jaguars though. I wanted a black X-Type with black wheels, but the X didn't have enough interior room; so I started looking at S-Types. It's too bad about their stigma about always being in the shop. The 2003+ cars that share design & parts with the Lincoln are actually great cars. I just couldn't find one that was clean enough for me. Love that ad! |
I used to have a 1979 XJ12L. The best hwy mileage I EVER got was 14mpg. If I didn't drive it at least twice a week the engine and tranny seals would dry up and leak. I think the Limeys that built the car were drunk because the body panels were up to 1/2" apart in some places.
The hp/tq were highest at 4000rpm and above. It wouldn't beat a Volkswagen from a stoplight but pedal to the metal at 80, very few cars could beat it. I ran it over 150 many times which was amazing considering it only made a little over 260hp. I'm very disappointed that Jags are losing their identity with a mass producer like Ford building them. :( I liked the identity they had, especially with the beautiful XJ6, but all is not lost, fellow Jag lovers!! Look what I found!! :) http://www.jag-lovers.org/concepts/c-xf.html |
