Default Ford SD 6.4 opinions.

How reliable is this engine? Any major changes coming to the 2010 model? BNC Offroad told me for $1500 they will ad a pipe/ECU or chip that will yield a 250hp gain +10 mpg, is that true or salesman BS?

Not very. The last good Ford diesel was the old 7.3. One guy is on his 4th 6.4L engine in 46,000 miles on his F-450, if that gives you any idea how bad it can get.

2010 is the new 6.7L Scorpion which is going to be their own design, instead of Navistar's, although based on Ford's track record with the 6.0 and 6.4, I would certainly wait before deciding to purchase that one.

250 hp and 10 more mpg? Yeah, right.

I have 2 6.4 and 7 6.0 Fords. No problems with 6.4's one has 60k and the other 29400,..The 6,o's one has 230k and still running..had very little problems..the key is to leave them stock..ya it's boring and slow..but it lives..when you add the power and beat on it it raises boost, lifts heads..and so on...The only ones I added power to were my own not the guys...and used it wisely..the 2 08's I bought are stock along with the 2 Duramaxs..stock is the way to go..

I have a 2008 F450 with a 6.4. 20K trouble-free miles. Excellent power and very quiet. It gets 12 mpg with a 4.88 rearend. I agree that the key is leaving them stock.

I also have a 2008 F-450 King Ranch with 12k miles with no problems so far. I think the best thing is the leave the truck stock. Hope this helps.

My 08 has 78k miles; nothing but oil changes and just got tires @ 72k...not too bad for 4x4; Goodyear Wranglers. They never used to last over 60k. The truck is stock and that is the key. My 99 7.3 went 185k w/o trouble, then add the Diablo chip and went thru 3 trannys until I sold it w/240k miles.
6.4 is a strong puller, but I don't like the exhaust incinerator; it now cycles every 2 hrs and sucks fuel. Since I had the dealer "flash" the computer for the dash light indicator-exhaust in cycle mode my mileage went down about 2mpg....they disagree, but I watch my mileage.
Nice truck though....can't beat the smooth power and awesome brakes
