I have a post up on www.cumminsforum.com about breaking gears on the G56 and so far no one has had that problem but I just put it up 15 minutes ago we'll see who else chimes in. I have a 2006 dually G56 and no issues for 62,000 miles.

As to Dodge automatics I had a 2003 3500 SRW with the four speed auto towing a 6000lb boat/trailer and had no issues other than lazy shifting from it. I was thinking about putting a quick-shift kit on it but traded it before I could find one.

...which brand in these years was the most reliable, best fuel economy and the most comfortable. Any help would be great!

Dodge Cummins hands down.

Default Ford

Plenty of F450's and F550's around. Check with your local DMV to see if it is considered a commercial vehicle in your state. Then check with your insurance company as how they rate it. My 01 7.3 (with mods) out pulls my 08 6.4. And does it getting 3 to 5 mpg better. Dodge is a p o s, drive train wise (with the exception of the engine). GMC is the only other option (great engine and tranny, crappy front end) in the years you are looking for. I am going for the 5.9 in a Ford with the allison trans (let me know when it happens). Stay away from the DPF vehicles. My .02

My two cents worth... I have owned them all.

7.3 Powerstroke will last you for many many miles although milege will come up a little short compared to the Cummins. The 6.0 is absolute junk and the mileage is terrible.

I had a nightmare 2006 Duramax LBZ with the Allison. 5 sets of injectors, 3 injector pumps, new fuel rails, new pressure sensors, and they still never fixed the problems. 22K in warranty work in one year. Truck spent 4 out of 12 months in the shop. All of this and truck was under 100k miles. Truck is middle of the road on mileage 15.5 mpg unloaded and usually around 12.8 pulling single engine boat/10.9 pulling a large twin. Chevy has some fuel management issues with the LBZ engine and it this is not an isolated case.

I would try for a 5.9 Cummins with a manual transmission. Auto will not hold up to towing. Dodge does lack on creature comforts in the cab but 20-22 mpg will keep a smile on your face. The 5.9's are bringing premium money with a manual trans right now due to emission systems problems with the 2007.5 - 2010 models so good luck!

I have a 2006 Dodge dually G56 manual trans. It is for sale.

Yes I would wish for the Infinity sound system and nav unit, but I can drive all day and step out of the cab feeling like I did when I got in it that day. Great seats and that counts for a lot in a work truck. AC blows cold and only knocks 1/2 mpg off the top. I have seen 23mpg on flat ground with the wind at my back.

Well the 5.9s might be selling at top used prices but I've had mine on Craigslist and Truck Trader for six months and not ONE phone call. I'm going to drop the price another thou right now.

I am not looking for a manual trans, the stop and go traffic down here would drive me nuts. What options do I have to make the dodge trans reliable?

I would suggest a triple disk torque converter and a billet valve body. With labor the bill should be around $2500 but you will have peace of mind that the trans is strong. Those two upgrades will take you to at least 600rwhp. Goerend's products are top shelf and you can visit www.cumminsforum.com to do more research into your needs.

Beyond the trans I would suggest air filter air intake and brake upgrades.

Smarty makes too much smoke. The Edge Juice w/Attitude works very well on the Cummins, as does the Stryker;
