Buying a new Subaru, how much discount???

I'm buying my wife a new Subaru Forester. The dealer claims to be selling the car for 2% over invoice. When we ran the numbers, this 2% deal was only $700 off retail.

Even though we are eligible for another $4500 off with our "clunker", I still feel the dealer has a bit more to work with to get the deal closed.

Basically, what would be considered a realistic discount off retail on a new 2010 Subaru.

Thanks in advance,

Kurt

if they are willing to sell the vehicle to you for 2% over invoice then they should have no problem bringing the invoice out so you can take a look at it, they still have dealer reserve(holdback) and other advertising money which will also show on the invoice. as for a fair discount that is a hard question to asnwer since every car has different markup. They deserve to make something, from a toyota dealer i would say if they will sell it to you for a real 1-2% over then thats a good deal. We have some cars that only have an $800 markup.

We bought an '09 Forrester last year for $300 under invoice
(1.3%). Keep trying....

What is your time worth looking for this thing? Call that guy that Lisa dealt with and see what he can do for you. Unfortunately this is the worse time to be working a deal because they are selling cars like crazy these days and untill that slows down there will be no deals to be had.

Kurt, one of my old buddys from Chicago is up that way, has a dealership in Vermont. Drove my BAM boat back in 85/86 when I raced it. Not sure what he can do but it's worth a call. Tell him I sent you.

Thanks again for the suggestions. We bought one today, not sure if we got the best price but the salesman was fantastic and took the time to really sell us on the car. We're feeling pretty good about the purchase. :drink:
