Let's see your Ford or GM do this

At the beginning you can see both axles are in the mud;

That truck isn't as stuck as it looks. His left side drives are up on solid ground. Front axle is the driving axle. Once the power devider is locked in, power will go to the rear axle that doesn't slip also.

Catmando 09-05-2009 11:17 PM

You think those Army boys were pulling a fast one? The way I see it the rig doesn't get on solid ground without the Cummins.

tx911 09-06-2009 12:05 AM

So you dont think a Ford or Chevy diesel is capable of spinning tires in 4wd anchored to a semi? The suprising part is that the POS transmission in the Dodge didnt let go. Must have been a 6-speed.

Drop my dually in low gear and let the clutch out and I'd have ripped that thing right out.....

It's more about traction.....

MarkSmith 09-06-2009 09:19 AM

That Catmando is just a trouble maker! lol:evilb:

And a non stop Cummins commercial. :party-smiley-004:

Cat I pulled out a truck like that with a hydrolic boat trailer and a 48 foot cruiser attached to it up a 45 degree ramp and barely had to touch my gas pedle.

Funny...my boat had a 540ci Ford motor. The only problem I ever had with it was the 1050 Dominator.

There's no doubt the Cummins is the best light-medium duty diesel engine out there. We'll see about the new 6.7 Ford, it sounds promising but it will still be a V8.

Maybe you're not so bad after all. :drink:

Boat looks like a precursor to the Eliminator 234 Edge.

TRS drive?
.

That semi was barely stuck. If that group of guys got behind it and pushed they more than likely could have got it out. Here is my point. If it was pulling a huge amount of weight the crappy 8-10K pound factory hitch would have snapped off. If the factory hitch did not hit the ground first, the junk Dodge tranny would have... Jeff

Sydwayz 09-06-2009 10:30 PM

Cat...
Here's a 1/2 ton Avalanche (w/ 5.3L gas V8) pulling a semi out of pretty nasty snow. It's all about knowing what you are doing and traction.

1) I'm still a Liberal, that's not going to change...

2) This hullform has been around for a long time. There was a 3 point boat called Spirit of America that crashed during a run for the world water speed record in 1955 I believe. Killed the driver. :( No one has used a 3 point hull for that record since then.

That hull was very unforgiving on reentry as you can guess from the transom pic. The Bladerunners are much better I'm sure.

3) Bravo1 drive.

It can't be Brian, that must be a photo shop job I tell you. :party-smiley-004: It is all about gearing. I put mine in 4wd low and if you have the weight in your truck you are going to pull out the load if your drive shafts don't break. That is why you get on the gas very slowly.

Well that's exactly what the Dodge driver did and he probly had the manual tranny. But as crappy as the Dodge automatics are, they can be rebuilt to handle lots of hp/tq.

Did you dig your boat out and run it this year?

Jassman 09-07-2009 09:27 AM

Cat ... what you think buddy ... http://www.dodge.com/en/2010/ram_heavy_duty/

nice looking, all new sheet metal, new interior, just praying they updated the tranny... also waiting for the new 6.7 Ford to arrive before I make my decision. The 08 Duramax and Powerstroke will stay for another year.

I think the new truck is awesome!! You know you want one...

It's either the 6 speed Getrag(G56) transmission or the 6 speed Orion 68RFE. My truck has the G56 so I can't comment on the Orion. I've been on www.cumminsforum.com and can't find any threads about 68RFE problems. In fact most of the guys are saying get the auto even if you're towing heavy.

4 Point solid mounts? Drag boat style?

Did you work with Drew on the 540 ci combo?

I'm not sure about that and since the boat no longer exists there's no way for me to check...

My understanding is Mr. Carlson used Drew Marine a lot. This motor was the 540/600 unit. The 1050 Dominator was very difficult to shift around the docks. It was almost as if it had a crash box so that I had to kill it to shift it.

The midrange performance was not good either which as we all know is where we spend most of our time running. Ateco motors has recalibrated the Dominator's circuitry and according to Bill Lawson the problems I alluded to have been solved.

That is this year old man. The 302 is what I had when you first joined. I have three boats. The 302 (going to be gutted and made as fast as possible, no interior at all), the 311 is the family truckster (going to stay stock), the Donzi 18 with big block is also going to stay stock.

AIR TIME 09-09-2009 12:34 PM

jons 311 runs nice, hey about the trucks in 84 I ordered mine as a shortie stepside 351 HO, C6 AUTO, all power plus locker in rear with true trac in front 4.10 gears, I DID HEADERS and a few other changes and used it for truck pulls/sand drags/mudboggs/ car shows/ icedrags on lake george ny undefeated for about 4yrs in mod tire class stock truck and wife was in all 3 classes. we ran 4000 race studs in 4 true trac tires it was like being on the street. but also pulled a 18wheeler out of a mall parking lot that had not been plowed and broke threw the snow banks, also pulled a 6 wheeler car carrier truck off the beach when he got stuck pulling a customer out:evilb:, I charged him. then there were 10s of trucks ,suvs over the years I would pull out of the woods/beach/snow/ice. I use to get calls all hours from people hey my friends will give you 100 to get the jeep out of the woods one was stuck on saplings lil trees they ran over a bunch then backed up next thing the jeep was 3feet off the ground:evilb::eek:. man I miss that truck later art

Agreed

In the interest of compromise there are lots of diesel people who say the best truck is the Ford/Cummins. It's hard to argue with that. I think the best truck is the F650/Cummins, especially now that Caterpillar is out of the truck diesel market. I know the new 6.7 is coming out but we'll just have to wait and see how that works out for Ford. There are many reasons big rigs use inline 6 cylinder diesels.

I love the F650, and Dodge does not have a comparable truck. The 4500-5500 trucks look like 3500s. Dodge needs to step up to the F650 market with a complete redesign but the economy is likely holding that project back( if there IS such a project)...

About the only gripe I've heard about the F650 is the very harsh ride. Kelderman is the only suspension mfr that I know of that has a system designed specifically for that truck and it likely costs big buck$$$$$.
