Putnam Class 5 hitch that I am posting in the swap shop for sale. It will fit a long wheelbase 2500hd or 3500 1 ton GM truck 2001 through 2006 and 2007 classic. 15,000 lb weight carrying capacity 1,500 lb tongue weight, 16,000 lb weight distributing capacity 1,600 lb tongue weight. If you are getting a bigger boat. UPGRADE YOUR HITCH!! The stock GM hitch is junk and not rated in weight carrying for much more than a 28' boat!

really???? my reciever is rated at 12500lbs. tongue I think is 1600lbs. why is my reciever junk? do they fall off or something? I just got a 38 and it tows great. By the way, your selling a reciever, not a hitch.:lolhit:

While you're knit picking 499, tongue weight is usually 10% of what the hitch is rated at (ie probably not 1600 lbs). Don't get fired up, a lot of guys tow with equipment that's way under rated. I'm not saying you are.

It's an excellent receiver at a very good price.

Your stock GM RECIEVER hitch is not rated for this weight carrying. They dont fall off but they bend. I rolled a stock one to the ground. You may have 12,000 if you have an aftermarket.

just looked... rated for 12k tongue is 1500lbs. its a V-5 Talon reciever. I bought the truck new in 2002 from my dealer and thats the reciever it came with. It came with the tow package but i think that was standard for the Duramax. Sleek, not getting fired up. just wanted an explaination why mine was/is garbage. I def. dont want to be over wieght on my stuff. thunder,good luck with the sale.

It's a little misleading, but a V5 is not the same as a Class 5, as I've been told. My Ford was the same way. Never understood it.

Stock GM hitch on a 2500HD is 12000 lb weight distributing (with weight distributing bars), 7500 lb weight carrying (no weight distributing bars). It is a little misleading until you read the fine print. I have a friend who "lost" his cat boat because the welds rust and the receiver cracked (separated) at the rusty welds on his stock GM hitch - 2001 2500HD. Truck was an Ohio truck, so it only saw salt in the winter. I noticed on mine, that the welds got rusty rather quick. I keep them painted to help with corrosion. If I remember correctly, the stock hitch on a late model F250 is 5000 lb weight carrying and 12000 lb "when properly equipped" whatever that means.

EXACTLY! The guy in the previous post apparently doesnt understand the difference between weight carrying and weight distributing. If you are towing a 38+' boat with a stock gm hitch......you are on borrowed time.

Same issue with the Fords. I had to replace mine. The stock hitch on my 2008 F350 was rated at 12500 distributing and 6000 regular. Don't forget to put a real ball mount and ball on it too! There's a difference in those as well. The tech at the hitch place that replaced mine said he has seen several GM's bent and mounting bolts snapped. I've seen a lot of people pull big stuff with the stock hitches. Not me, it's a small investment to make sure your boat or what ever you tow isn't going anywhere.

Understand now. thank you. I will be looking for a classs V over the winter. seems harder to find one for gm short beds than long beds.
