NautibyNature 05-19-2010 07:34 PM

Fhey have already discontinued it, I think they put a 6.7 in them now.

That was the first year of that motor. Best thing is to go to a Ford diesel truck forum and read what they have to say about it. I'm a Ram diesel owner so I don't know anything about the 6.4 PSD.

I have a 08 350. I have 36K miles and havent had any problems. Mileage could be better... 13-16 on Hwy. Pulling I get 10-12. Really depends on how you drive them. It pulls everything I have put behind it with no problem. I have passed many going up hills pulling 14000#. I think problems happen when you start adding chips or aftermarket parts to improve performance. IMO

With chips and tuners come higher EGTs. Water/methanol systems help keep them down.

What I couldn't believe was only 350hp from a twin turbo system. On a Cummins, twins will get you at least 500hp.

Im just not willing to take a chance with a chip. To many guy I no have used them. Then wished they never did. Mine has more enough power for what I need. May only be 350 hp but it has 600 ft# of torque.

Catmando 05-20-2010 07:15 PM

I don't have a chip/tuner on my truck either but I will get the Hypertech Econ soon. Guys on cumminsforum.com who have them say they get 2-5 mpg with them.

capt2130 05-20-2010 08:01 PM

I would like the better mileage. I just don't want to chance screwing something up.

Catmando 05-20-2010 08:34 PM

The Econ is a mild, safe tuner that focuses on mileage. It only has three settings, unlike the Smarty which has TEN.

firehawkcat 05-20-2010 09:55 PM

I'm sold on the 2007 dodge with the 5.9 cummins diesel towing 26' cat I was getting 15 mpg at 75 mph and 20 to 30 mph winds on highway 20 to 22 dont know about the 6.7 heard good and bad

firehawkcat 05-20-2010 09:57 PM

also no chip or programmer and only 30000 miles milage should go up with more milage

boating37 05-20-2010 10:28 PM

Well walked away from the 2008 f250 I was going to buy, just read to many things about the mpg.Going to look for an older one with a 7.4 I think, or a GMC Durmax?

Did you buy it when the 07s came out? Very hard to find an 07 5.9 now. You can't beat the 5.9 for mileage and power, although the Dmax comes close, but I'll never have a V8 diesel. I love my 06 dually but the 2010 Laramie I drove was off the charts nicer than mine.

The 6.7 has more power and torque than the 5.9 but not the fuel mileage unless you delete the emissions stuff. Lots of aftermarket mods for it now too. It's still an inline Cummins, just a bigger bore and stroke...

I have an 08 F-350 6.4 30k miles, 10k of them pulling heavy Formulas. Absolutly zero problems. Mileage is around 12-13 empty,10-11 loaded. There will always be bad press on anything new. Dodge,GM,Ford all good trucks, but I wouldn't stray from my Fords.

Have you ever chipped out any of you trucks you've owned? This is my first diesel. That's why I'm a lil leary.

You don't need a power chip towing that. The nice thing about the 6.4 is the twin turbos which don't allow any lag. My single turbo doesn't hit till around 1300-1500rpms which really sucks. If I was pulling anything over 10k I would get twins.

I've had two diesels and have not chipped either one. You're not going to hurt your truck with a mileage tuner. It will pay for itself within at least six months and continue to save you money.

WMF 05-21-2010 11:01 PM

I have a 2008 F-450, 4 door, dulley with the 6.4 Twin turbo Diesel, I love the truck it has a Spartan tune, DPF delete, intercooler pipe, and a air intake, the truck runs great and gets 19 MPG, get a Ford, they did not take a bailout:grinser010:.

Thanks for the info. I will have to check it out. The boats not that heavy. Right at 10k loaded with trailer. Pulling my skid steer and dump trailer is a different story. That's just over 13k.

I really like the 34 Party Cat, Powerboat mag had a test on it, Teague and Tomlinson liked it too, ran almost 90 with 525s and handled like it was on rails. Biga$$ deck boat lol.

On a more personal note, Debbie Christiansen has done a tremendous job of keeping Advantage Boats in operation after the deaths of Harry and Jeff. I have great respect and admiration for her.

Fountain4402 05-28-2010 02:46 AM

Buddy has an 08 450 dually gets about 12 towing. I mean heres the thing all the different diesels will have some advantages and disadvantages. I can tell you out of the big three they will ALL suck fuel specially if your towing.

Yes she has, that story is crazy. When I had first heard it. I was like WTF! Who in the hell in their right mind could ever imagine doing something like that. Hard enough to loose your spouse... then to loose your son. WOW!! I think I would have wanted to throw in the towel. She defiantly is a strong woman to be able to have gone thru what she has. Plus while going thru it having to keep the business running. I to have alot of respect for her,

I like the canopied 40 too. Hull #1 was the first time I saw the 2+2+2 seating arrangement, nice!

Chuck 06-01-2010 06:38 AM

I would recomend against this truck. I get 7.5 mpg towing and 11 not. 2008 F-450 that has been through 3 radiators and a motor. Has left me stranded on the side of the road for all of these breakdowns. There is a thread about this truck if you do a search (26+pages).

BillR 06-01-2010 12:22 PM

Rogman on OSO has a MINT 2006 F350 Crew Cab Lariat diesel LB w/ only 20K miles on it. VERY well maintained, he even waxes the underbody. No issues, I think $30k will buy it. It is LOADED too.
Just FYI
