Chevy 2500HD 6.0 ... 3.73 or 4.10 gears?

I would bite the bullet on the $6k and get the 2011. You'll need the 4.10 with the 4wd. I don't know of anyone running 3.73 with 4wd. I'm sure some are but I bet they wish they had 4.10.
If it's 2wd get the 3.73.
If it's 2wd get the 3.73.

my 2010 is 4wd Z71 w/3.73, I have only pulled about 8500-9000 so far and it has less than 2,000 miles on it, but I can see where 4.10 would be usefull, actually I wish mine had 4.10 to be 100% honest. with this 6 speed tranny you can manually up-down and lock in any gear at any time, I have done it locked in 4th, 5th, and 6th, with a couple different loads, if you get a 3.73 truck then lock it in 5th for long trips and the effective ratio will be the same as 4.10's in 6th..

I think that's really neat. A guy on cumminsforum with a new 2010 dually said he tows 17-18k with 3.42 gears. We have trouble believing him...

We just ordered also a 2011 GMC with the new frame, diesel and so on. It is a big improvement over our 07 and 08 GM trucks.. but those are dooleys. One Dooley has the 3.73's and the other the 4.10's. Get the 3.73's, better on fuel mileage and pulls just as much as the 4.10 does and gets better mileage doing it. I also want you to check those figures out, I think you made a typo on the pulling difference between the two gears.. I could be wrong, but on our 2..2011 Fords they are have basically the same towing capacity when comparing ratios between the 3.73's and 3.55's. You will like the new improved GM, they also did a good job and their homework.. Competetion is great for all of us. Good Luck with your purchase. Jeff

Most of the 6.0 2500HD's have the 3.73 ratio. You had /have to special order the 4.10 gears and almost no dealer did/does that. The local Chevy and GMC dealers ran a 350 mile radius check, for me back in May and there were only 1 or 2 with 4.10's, and those were either WT's or snow plow prep kitted trucks.
Actually, for the 2011's the spread is bigger. 3.73 is rated at 9600 lb versus 13000 lb for the 4.10's. In 2010, the 3.73 was 9800 and 4.10 was 12300 lb. So you get 40% more capability with only 10% more gear ... that doesn't sound right, but thats what their literature and website say.

Those ratings are for the 6.0 gas engine. They only offer the 3.73 for the diesel, and they list the rating at 13000 for the diesel with 3.73. Earlier 6.0 gas engine 2500HD's were only offered with the 4.10 - that's what I have now in a 2001 4WD 2500HD extended cab. You had to get the 8.1 with allison to get a choice between 4.10 or 3.73.
