Default Chevy 2500HD 6.0 ... 3.73 or 4.10 gears?

I am looking at getting either a 2011 Chevy 2500HD LTZ Crew Cab with 4.10 gears, or a 2010 GMC 2500HD SLT (basically the same truck) with 3.73 gears. Biggest difference is that I can get the 2010 GMC for $6,000 less than the 2011 Chevy. I know there is some difference in the frames between 2010 and 2011, but my bigger concern is the gears. I've heard both ways ... 3.73 will tow nearly as good as 4.10, so get the 3.73's and same a little on fuel ... and ... 3.73 is a dog, get the 4.10. I'd like to put the 6 grand in my pocket instead of Government Motor's pocket, but at the same time, I don't want to regret what I buy. Tow rating for the 3.73 gears is 9800 versus 13000 for the 4.10's but putting a 35 Lightning behind a 4.10 SRW truck sort of scares me. I had the 35 behind my 2001 2500HD and didn't like it one bit! Put that boat behind my friend's F350 crewcab, long bed DRW 7.3 powerstroke and didn't even know it was behind the truck. Sold the 35, but will probably have another one sometime in the future. Either truck (3.73 or 4.10) will tow our current 29 Fountain quite well. Duramax is not an option for me, so I'm not going to even think about that. Would like some real world opinions. I currently have a 2001 2500HD extended cab with 6.0 and 4.10's. No real complaints, its just time to replace it.
Thanks,
Bob

WOW,long post but really, whats a 35 loaded w/trailer wiegh? 9800 tow rating might be close. 4.10's would cover you.

35 Lightning (non staggered) = 8600 lb
aluminum tandem axle Myco = 2000 lb
100 gallon of fuel + "stuff" in the boat =900 lb

4.10's definitely cover it, but 3.73's are not that far away, either. Not sure having a 35 behind a SRW truck is all that smart, even if it is rated to tow it.

Go with the 4.10's. That extra towing capacity will help out some day. Fuel mileage isn't that bad. I have a 2007 GMC 6.0 w/ 4.10's. Used to pull a 38 TG with it.

I have a 2010 w/3.73's

to tow your 35 you should get the 4.10's, if your looking at a 2wd then it's an $800 swap, get a Diablo programmer to correct the speedo, and your done.... and still $5000 ahead of the game..

the 6 speed tranny is freakin awesome, but 5th and 6th gear is still double overdrive..

it's all about torq multiplication

Thanks for the replies. I'm looking at the 4WD and have been told it would be ~ $1500 to swap out the gears. Question I had about swapping the gears, though, was shift points, any ECM mapping and speedo? Also, in the event I ever did get in an accident pulling a 35, the VIN will still say 9800 lb towing. Not sure I could convince attorneys, etc, that since I changed gears to 4.10, the tow rating "is" 13000 lb.

A tuner like the Diablo Predator can easily adjust your electronics for the new gears.

Go with the 4.10s right off the bat.

There is no such thing as too much truck! And you can never have too much power.

Or just have the dealer work a little harder and find a truck that works better for you.
