In reality the 7.3's are considered one of the most reliable diesels around. They are simple, loud, and adequately powered. I sought out the 7.3 because of it's reputation. A LOT of these trucks have 200, 300, 400k miles on them. Short comings are in the front suspension (they are brutal on ball joints, and other components). Also - a LOT of oil pans develop leaks if they are exposed to salty environments.... I LOVE MINE........I have 10X,xxx on it and will be keeping it for a while.... |
I had a '96 power stroke, ran it to 275k, sold it to a guy who ran it to 350k before upstate new york winters rotted it out. I did replace the trans at 200k but it was only $1,500 for a rebuilt directly from Ford.

I had 96 F350 PSD that was picture perfect visually and mechanicly. I ran this truck to 140K. When the time came to sell the truck I couldn't give it away. There are still alot of small minded people out there that think that anything over 100K is extremely high milage. I also found that when you tried to explain it to them that it's a diesel, they don't care.

Fuel mileage on Ford SuperDutys is by no means linear; even "empty".
Hundreds of things can skew results not including driver style. Mirrors in vs. mirrors out. 4x4 vs. 2WD SRW vs. DRW Bug deflector? Windshield visor? Cap/open/tonneau cover/bed rack Hauler bed/fleetside bed/contractor bed 3.73 vs. 4.10 rear Lifted vs. lowered Tire size both width and height Wheel size Wheel weight etc. etc. I've got a 2000 PSD with 109,xxx miles on it. I love it. I'd get another one in a "heartbeat." (pun not intended) A few crazy folks have swapped them into Ford Bronco (fullsize) SUVs. I'd love to find one of those for a daily driver! |

I get about 16-17 unloaded with a 4X4 Dually 4 Door. Also - I do a lot of idling - for example during the winter I will let it idle for 15 or 20 minutes before I go anywhere - even during the summer I let it idle for 10 minutes or so.

I say if the body and interior are straight and clean then that's a good indicator that the truck has been taken care of and in good shape. That's the problem I've been having. Is finding one that has not been beat up.
