2000 Ford 7.3 w/470,000 and it runs great . Replaced the trans at 370,000 . I bought it new and she still rides good .

I bought a F250 96 Powerstroke/auto with 160k miles,
sold it 4 years later with 250k to a freind, at 300k he did have to get the tranny rebuilt, but otherwise no other problems, it has close to 400k now, tows a 10k tractor with it, truck has had tuner/chip/exhaust and filter since 150k before I even bough it. .. Unless your a moron you cant kill a 7.3.. |
Trans goes on em all if you use them a alot... y trans guy say he builds as many gm and dodge trans as Ford... I use 3 clutch billet convberters and sing stage lockup when I redo them, big difference...

I've got 218K on mine and my son has 198K on his. Both run like the day they left the dealership. 7.3 The best diesel ever built for a pickup. The 6.0 is a big no no. Three of my buddies have all had major issues. I actually had an 04 with a 6.0 and sold it and went back to an 03 with the trusted and true 7.3. Check out www.Thedieselstop.com there are guys on there with well over 500K and still running strong. Just my opinion but I would find a nice clean 00 to 03 with the 7.3. You will be very happy!!!! Oh, by the way I get 18 mpg loaded or unloaded, it doesn't seem to care.

My MPG unloaded is great, but when my Cafe is behind me it is in the 10-11 range. Probably 14k lbs on average. Same when we towed my Father's 29' Wellcraft home from Connecticut - about 11. |
Me personally 200k is to much. Engine might be fine but everything around it isnt going to last much longer. I understand if you take care of things bla bla bla, and some people get lucky. But chances are after 100k or so your going to start replacing things.
IMO I dont keep keep diesels past their 5 year power train warranty. I usually buy a New/used keep it for 4 to 5 years and dump it. let somebody else deal with the problems. |
I've been a Cummins owner since 1999 and the only other diesel i would consider would be a 7.3 Powerstroke.

2000 lariat SC 4x4 with 140k only replaced a leaky water pump at 101k, and chinese hubs from ebay at 135k. High confidence vehicle, especially in 4x4 low coming up a steep slick boat ramp.. The paint is unbelieveable on this truck, the overall quality has been amazing. Too bad we're getting raped at the pump. I get 15-21 empty, and 12-13 towing my 9400lb rig.

Which one do you like?
If you could not tell by my name I drive a 2001 7.3 I love the truck. Its ride, Its looks and its dependable. It has 326,000 miles on it with a programmer and oversize tires and I tow 3 different boats with it along with skidloaders and what ever else will fit on the trailer. But what is the overall condition of the truck you are looking at. Rather its a dodge or a ford. Dodge in my opinion has better towing power but the comfort and dependability of the drivetrain stinks. The overall driving down the road comfort in the ford is much better. Hey count the cup holders. If you are only using your truck to tow a boat I would recommend a nice clean looking low milage 1997 f-250 with the first generation 7.3 liter with 3:73 or 2:55 gears. Good towing and good milage with a load. Pretty easy to work on too. Fords, Chevy, Dodge diesels owned them all. Forget chevy. But which one do you like? Stay away from the 6.2s and .5s. Note: Fuel injectors in the 7.3 more than likely need replacing if over 100,000. Good luck.
