i would look into a dmax.. |
It'll pull it for sure, but its the 3.73's that are really hurting it. If it had 4.10's the rating would be a lot higher.
|
The 6.0L sucks for towing. It really does.
Is your 29 Outlaw a single or a twin? If it's a single, you will have a little easier time towing it. However, if it's a twin, and/or you plan on a bigger boat one day; you will really appreciate a bigger motor--i.e. Duramax. |
Make sure you have GOOD brakes on the trailer and should be OK. Just dont pass the gas station

Can the truck do it?????? Yes! Will you be satisfied???? I doubt it. I was towing a 24' Formula with04, 6.0L and 4:10's. A long hill would make it shift out of OD but when it accelerated after the down shift it would pick up speed till we went over the hill. My other truck was 07, 6.0L with 3:73 and it would shift out of OD while approaching the hill and then labor all the way up with high rpm's. Your truck will handle it fine but you will find the hills to be a killer and that is where I don't think you will be satisfied with 3:73 gears. Get 4:10's or Dmax. The Dmax is way over kill but you can get a bigger boat too. :grinser010: |
As Griff said, going with the 4.10's will really help alot, both in tow rating and overall acceleration under load.
The 2007 and up 6.0 is not the same anemic 6.0 that its predecessor was. It is a great engine for a gas engine, it will not pull like a Dmax will, but I assure you, you will have no issue pulling a 29 Outlaw. Especially since the 2007+ have the 6-speed transmission as well. Fact is I used mine to pull something quite a bit bigger and heavier, and had no issues. Did it pull like a deisel, no, but I had no problem maintaining with the flow of traffic down the highway. If you have money to burn, then get the diesel. However a little math would show that it will take 7+ years to recoup the cost of the Dmax over the gas engine in fuel savings, with normal driving (15K+- miles a year). Unless you are pulling 10K lbs every day all day. Don't be afraid of the new 6.0, matched with the 6-speed its a good tow vehicle. |
thanks for all the input . I have two trucks to chose from one was a Denali 6.0 3.73 the other is a slt with the Dmax look like it will be the Dmax I rather have more than I need
thanks again for all the input |

I can get tad over 70 @5200 rpms with half tank and 3 people gps. I'm takin out the exhaust plates and gettin a 26 labbed prop. I'm praying for 73ish with the 15hp extra. That is if I still have it come spring. I'm in the midst of working a deal on a mid 80mph boat.... top secret.... shhh... |

thanks again for all the input Great! If you have not had a diesel before the Dmax will make you a convert. You will definately love the power, longevity and quiet of the Dmax. |

I test drove the new lml. It's nice but they want too much for new trucks. My lbz will last me a while yet.
|
the 1500 denali has a 6.2 motor the 2500 HD denali has 6.0 or a Dmax . the dealer let me take home the 6.0 to try pulling the outlaw but we are having an ice storm today so I don't think that will happen. He is letting me also try the Dmax .

I'm shocked. My ex had a 2004 Chevy Avalanche 2wd with a 5.3 and we couldn't get any better than 13mpg out of it just commuting with it.
BTW I have a 1500 5.3 and it gets 14-15 around town empty, truck is a stripper bench seat regular cab. I am 99% sure 3.73 rear. |
JS, ex's avalanche was a 1500 also.
Right now for towing, I have a (new body style) '07 Tundra double cab TRD offroad 4.7 5speed auto with 4.10's in the 9.5" rearend. Rated for 8100lbs. Unloaded I average between 20-21mpg. Pulling, I average 15-16mpg. I've been dying to order another new one that's exactly the same with darker interior color, the 5.7L/6spd auto/4.30 gears 10.5" rear, and the optional supercharger that bumps horsepower up to 500 ponies. Nothing like a new truck with a 100k mile bumper to bumper warranty with 500hp :evilb: |
Thats funny..the rating on the widow sticker not even close to those mileage #'s ????

In August, I sold my 2001 Chevy 2500HD Xcab with 6.0, 4.10 axle ratio truck. Bought it new in 2001 and drove it 160,000 miles. I got 13ish mph around town, 16ish on highway, and 8ish pulling my boat / trailer (current boat/trailer is right at 8100 lbs, total weight including fuel, and all of the other "junk" in the boat). I bought a new 2010 GMC 2500HD 4 door SLT (11 inches longer then the previous truck) with the 6.0, 3.73 axle ratio. Had many sleepless nights tossing and turning about whether to get the 3.73 ratio or order a 2011 with 4.10 ratio. Now having had the new 3.73 ratio truck for 4 months, I can say with certainty I should have bought the 2011 with 4.10 ratio. Here are several reasons why: fuel economy ... most said I would get better mpg with the 3.73 ... well it doesn't! Its more or less the same: 12ish mpg around town (actually 11.8 most of the time, dividing miles by gallons, not the in-dash computer estimator), 16-17 on highway, and 8ish pulling the same boat/trailer. When it shifts from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd, there is a very noticable bog ... even without the boat/trailer behind it. Very noticable with the boat/trailer behind it. It always seems like it is struggling right after it shifts, loaded or unloaded. 1st gear is so low, and shifts so quick, it really "jerks" the coupler (surge brakes) no matter how gentle you try to pull away from a stop sign or stop light. I'm getting better at soft starts, but the first couple times, I thought I was going to rip the hitch off the truck, even trying my best to be gentle. My 2001 with the 4 speed and 4.10 had none of those characteristics. I will say though, that this new truck's engine is much more resposive, and has noticable power difference once you get the revs up. Not saying that I'm totally dissatisfied with this new truck (I actually like it a lot), but if I could do it over again, all things being equal, I would get the same truck with the 4.10 ratio and not look back ... assuming you are getting the 6.0 gas engine. I think all Duramax's have the 3.73 and no other option. I posted a thread on this forum when I was making my decision to buy and got about 60/40 in favor of the 4.10, if I remember right.
Sorry for the long post, but wanted to give my "back to back" experience, now having had both. PS. I put a 35 Lightning behind the 2001 a couple of times for a very short distance (5 miles from storage to ramp on flat divided state highway)... would highly recommend NOT doing that. Would never do that again! |
