vented rear diff cover, ford superduty??
I have a 99 f-250 superduty w/7.3 diesel. Looking to get a vented rear diff cover but finding them very expensive. Is this worth the investment or not? I have a 29' powerquest i will be pulling this summer. I just purchased the truck and the boat. The previous owner of the truck pulled a 28' chaparel with no problems.. I am a auto tech and have that frame of mind that i need to try to keep things cool. Whats everyones take and where can i get one without paying $150-300 for a cover!!

I am also an ASE Master and I am with you on the cool thought process. Because of spider cracks on the gear facing that many are seeing pulling heavy loads with thin synthetic fluid keeping it cool is a big thing for me.
I put covers on every truck I have. If you google search you can find many different makers and there is a big difference in quality also but cooling the diff is a very good idea. The price bites but it is still cheaper than a gear set and easier to install. :grinser010: |
gonna change my diff fluid in the spring and it calls for synthetic...i think. I have seen some diff covers but they are so dam expensive, just for the cover. Its hard to swallow a $300 cover. I know its cheaper than a diff rebuild but is it really neccessary. I called the dealer cause i have noticed that the newer superduties do have the vented covers on them oe.

I installed a Mag-Hytec on my F350 (Powerstroke). Ran Redline lube in it. I also installed a temp sensor. I was surprised how hot that rearend ran. 200 to 280 degrees. Ran semi's for 19 years and never really saw temp's like that on them (I know more capacity). So my point is, the more you can help to cool it the better.

The 2011 Superduty's come with an aluminum finned cover. I think your on the right track. It's about time for them to be OEM.

Nissan started to use a finned cover in 05 too on thier titans and SUVs. It does not take much finned area to really dump alotta heat.

I found the mag-hytech, but wow...$300 for a diff cover..come on!! Im sure it helps out but give me a break. I did find some cheaper ones out there. The mag-hytech is nice but don't really need the dip stick. not gonna check the fluid level on a regular basis. I"ll probable put something on before i start pulling the boat.
