7.3 idle surge

This morning my truck started having this issue. When I pulled in the drive and put it in park the rpm went up to around 1000 rpm the dropped down, then when I SHIFTED BACK into drive it did it again. It did it a few times getting it into the garage. Any ideas about what it is? The truck is a 2002 7.3 automatic. The truck has 119,000 miles on it.

Have you had the CPS replaced under the recall?

bigboat--what king of mileage do you get? I have 03 7.3 auto 4X4 No programmer all stock but I have 35's on it and only get 12 aroung town and 8 pulling my boat on trips.

Check your transmission fluid level.

CPS has been relaced. It is a cc shortbed 4X4 auto with 33's I get like 17.9 on the highway towing almost 4,000lbs. It has a dp tuner which got me 1mpg. Just went to Florida the end of November with no load and got into the upper 18's mpg on the way down.

take the chip or programmer out of it and see if it continues.

With the above. Check you EBPS (exhaust back pressure sensor) and tube. Right front of engine, tube runs off the exhaust manifold up to the sensor. Pull the tube and give it a good cleaning, along with the sensor. Pete

After that I would read codes and see if anything comes up. My next thought as long as all the simple stuff is ok (ie:oil condition, level, fuel, fuel filter, you get it) would be a ICP sensor. Let me know if you have any code and I can PM you a abbreviation list. Pete

Is this only under cold start up ? They will idle them selfs up to warm up and it truns off soon as you hit the brake.
