Transmission diagnosis/opinions
Hi,
I'm having a tranny problem with a cargo van and wonder if anyone might have any ideas on the problem. Vehicle is a 2000 Ford with a 4.6 motor, pretty sure the tranny is a 4R70W. The problem occurs when coming to a stop, the RPM's will fall and the engine stalls, re-starts and runs great in park or neutral, shift to drive or reverse and stalls again unless I two pedal it to keep the RPM's elevated. Once vehicle is underway shifts out fine with no slipping, until coming to a stop, repeats scenario again. I suspect the torque converter isn't unlocking and stalling the engine. Could the torque converter control solenoid be failing or sticking? I know this isn't an automotive forum but I thought I'ld ask,Thanks! Steve |
Possible but not likley. When a convertor or solenoid sticks in lock up, it feels like a standard with the clutch engaged. Dropping it into gear will lead to a very LOUD BANG and stall. NO "two footin" it will keep it running in gear without smoke being involved.
I would suggest scanning the trans range sensor. Typical ford issue. PCM thinks the trans is always in park. I would also check the idle air bypass for carbon build up sticking the valve. More common in colder weather. |
I already tried cleaning the IAC valve and then replaced it with no change. The vehicles at the dealer and they're saying it needs a torque converter and valve body at minimum or a remanufactured tranny, $2000 or $2700, take your pick! I'm not convinced it's totally shot, but it might be. It just runs to good otherwise, i would think I would be experiencing slipping if the tranny was junk.
