How about the 454 TBI gasser? Mine is 100% stock and original down to the old GM pellet style catalytic converter and single exhaust. Tows decent power wise, but sure aint winning any races.

Was thinking RV cam and dual exhaust?? Chip? Im sure headers would be nice, but unless you buy high dollar ones, they always rot out and leak?? Plus i have the factory smog injection manifolds..

Truck seems to pull nice at low rpm, but with the TH400 3 spd, and 4.10 rear, its revving pretty good on the highway. No pull in the upper RPM. Prob due to the $hit exhaust and anemic cam

I don't have any photos, but my father recently picked up an '84 GMC one-ton dump to tow the Sutphen. The ramp we use can be pretty slippery and we needed a four wheel drive truck. This one has been gone through and is very clean.

I just sold my 95 dually... Headers and good exhaust really help those trucks out. Mine had bumped compression (9:1), hedman elite headers with dual 3" exhaust and dynomax super turbos, merlin heads, towing cam, big bore TBI and injectors and a custom chip by harris performance. With the 5 Speed manual, I could pull all the hills on the WV turnpike at 70 mph in 4th gear... just couldn't keep the revs high enough in OD. If you ran 80+ , it would actually pull them in 5th, but thats just a little fast for comfort. All that towing my 303 that scaled at 11,000 on the trailer.

I absolutly loved towing with it, but I would get 5-7 mpg loaded, unloaded, up-hill, down-hill, left, right, and backwards. That got old.

If you do anything, do the exhaust. Best bang for the buck in my opinion.

I have an 1985 burb with 1 ton axles (4:10s) 454 with a 4l80e overdrive trans, 4" lift, 33s' and np205 transfer case.Love the body style and room but, 6mpg all the time! I'm going to put a cummins 12 valve in next and keep the 454 for something else. In retrospect I should have bought an old Dodge as much as I drive it (never).

Same here, 460 with c6 tranny...not sure on gears though, but i do know at around 70 im at 3000 RPM's!

I also have the fold down back seat into a bed... Have 2 12" subs under it also that it came with.... I love the truck just dont like the gas bill

Well with the Cummins you'll drive it a lot more and feel better towing your boat getting 14mpg.

Here's a link, they are putting them on the Ford 6.4 also to try and help the MPG's some are getting 5 more. Still not great but better. I was going to put one on my Bronco but never towed much and the big tires lowerd my RPM's to about 2300 @75 mph.

had a gear vendor o/d in my old 6.2 diesel chevy 4x4 dually . turbo 400 w/4x4 . worked great made the trucks top end 20mph faster and I towed with it on. BTW the 460 is a dog motor in stock form.
