6.7 dodge diesels

I'd hate to hijack Johnny's new truck thread so I thought I'd toss this out under a new one.

I'd like feedback from owners of the new Dodge diesel engine.
I was looking at some diesel truck forums today and they're kind of taking some negative reviews from the owners.
I'd be curious as to what year your unit was/is and what problems you've encountered and at what mileage you encountered them.

As always, thanks for y'alls insight. This board is such a wealth of knowledge.

See ya,
Kelly

I've heard good and bad about the 6.7 . i have a 2007 both engines were offered that year. I went with the reliable 5.9

I did a lot of reading when I was thinking of buying one and came to the conclusion that if you are not pulling everyday then you need to do the deletes and get rid of the EGR.

Quicksilver 01-24-2011 10:02 PM

Buddy has had a few, 1st one had the turbo replaced after failing on a drive, then the motor replaced. Had two others since, the 2nd one had some issues, but the one he has now has been fine. These are all loaded mega-cabs. And def do the dpf delete and regen... good tune and couple mods and these trucks run so much better (though that goes for any of the big 3, regen and dpf sucks).

If you perform these mods will it null and void the Mfg's powertrain warranty?
I read the same info on each of the truck forums during my searches of the boards for info.

I'll probably go the Dodge direction anyway because it is a sweet price indeed. His OTD is only a few hundred more than the Chevy and the Ford before TT&L.

Please keep the insight coming 'cause I'm not running any redlights to hustle down there and pick up the new truck.

See ya,
Kelly

I have owned 5 Dodge Rams, 03 4x4 fully performance moded 200,000mi auto, 2003 6 speed 2wd 400,000mi 99% towing 20,000lbs , 08 4x4 lifted hemi 6 speed 89,000mi, 08 auto 6.7 40,000 miles, new 2 months ago 2010 6 speed 6.7 21,000 miles all towing 20,000lbs. First and only time back for a warranty was a month ago. At 11,000 miles of solid towing 20,000lbs on these nasty roads we have all over the country, the truck needed an alignment. No big deal, they took care of it.
Very reliable, comfortable, awesome looks, amazing interior, great value, sweet trucks! I will buy another. Yes ford and chevy are nice. Nothing is as reliable as a inline 6 though. Yes I am planning on the dpf delete and many other H&S products. Never had a problem with either or my 6.7, even though the 08 had a edge programmer.
I love the dodge ram, and the 6.7 cummins. Yeah I am excited to see what they do next, and buy the time its out I will have 250,000+ miles, so I couldn't wait that long and I am glad I did not. When towing 20,000lbs (plus the weight of the truck) 13ft tall behind me, I still can pass 70% of big rigs on the hills, Thats plenty of power (stock with 3.42 gears and 33" tires!). Any faster and I would be speeding so much I would lose my CDL! Honeslty when driving so many miles, its more relaxing to put the cruise on in the right lane and go with the slow flow, instead of back and forth from the right lane to the left.
My point, the current cummins dodge is awesome!

There you have it. Mine was a 5.9 with the G56 manual. Loved the powertrain but the interior was tacky and unrefined. The 10s and 11s are light years better inside.

TomFTM 01-25-2011 07:27 AM

I have an 09 2500 quad with manual 6spd 4x4, truck has 9200 miles. So far so good.

baywatch 01-25-2011 08:03 AM

I have an 08 laramie 3500.

until 15k miles I had issues with the DPF, and Turbo, as well as replaced a water pump.

At 60k miles now an no problems since replacing the turbo around 15k. My interior is nice but Cat is correct about the 2010's and newer they are very impressive.

LAriverratt 01-25-2011 08:26 AM

have owned a 99 dodge 2500 quad cab 4x4 5.9 auto..good truck crappy interior and the trans was/is a POS..still in my quarry fleet. I have a 04 2500 crew lwb 4x4 5.9 6speed manual... 145k on it, its my work truck great truck but the interior is still lacking... had a 08 F250 4x4 6.4 auto...trans problems at 30k miles and mph was horrible..traded it in on a dodge 2010 3500 4x4 lwb crew cab drw...have only 14k on it...all it does is pull the boat and toy hauler for the most part...interior is WAY better than the 04... the heated/ventilated seats and heated steering wheel is awesome truck rides ok (it is a 3500) and it gets better fuel mileage than the ford without any tinkering...will do that soon though. I would go dodge in line 6 over a v-8 any day...they just perform better...if a v-8 was the chit all the diesel manufactures would have gone to it years ago!!!! just my .02

IlmorDonzi 01-25-2011 02:14 PM

I have a '07 Dodge 1 ton duelly with the 6.7 Cummins with the 6 speed auto tranny. I've never had a minutes worth of trouble out of it. I pull a Donzi 38ZR with it.

I want to put a performance kit in it to get more hp and more mileage. I don't want to modify my exhaust system if i don't have to. Can anyone save me the search time and tell me the best kit to get?

I can't wait til the Tickfaw 200 gets here.

I heard the SMARTY is good.

575cat 01-25-2011 03:03 PM

contact H & S performance 1 888 628 1730 your going to have trouble trying to get performance & mileage with that DPF & egr on there ,get rid of it and you will be extremely happy. that EGR is the internal engine contaminator, when I had 8000 miles on my 6.7 I pulled the horn above the grid heater and it was packed already with soot already ! these systems are what screw up the turbos also .43000 miles on mine now and th oil stays nice and clean between oil changes. watch your oil level rise after 1500 to 2500 miles on after an oil change, otherwise an excellent truck, pulls my fountain great ,set the cruise at 70 @ 1700 rpm and holds it great. Also ck out cummins forum.

Go to that link above and do your due diligence. I no longer have a diesel truck but I'm still a member there. The Cummins forum is the biggest and best website for Cummins owners.

Exactly, I don't understand the point of the egr systems with dpf and regen mode blah blah blah... causes more trouble and was absolutley pointless to add to all the big 3 hd's. Let's see worse fuel mileage...check, wasting fuel for regen...check, high egt's...check....whatever idiot came up with this for the epa I hope chokes on a chicken bone.

Funny how on all 3, once you remove the dpf and stop regen and have a good tune.. the trucks run much smoother, have way more power and torque, and get way better mileage and no worries of high egt's like before. What a bunch of putzs

2007 3500 6.7.....no trouble

Cummins is working on some inside-engine solutions. Hopefully they will be able to reduce emissions and soot without all the bandaid things they've put on the 6.7. My 5.9 had an EGR system inside the engine and the first time I turned it on after an oil change the oil was as black as it was before the change. Very frustrating.

Congrats to Dodge on the 2010+ dually fenders, they are great looking!

The Dodge is good looking and reasonably priced but the Made in Mexico sticker kills it!

I don't remember where my 03 3500srw was made, but my 06 dually was built in Mexico. I didn't know that when I bought it but I would have bought it anyway.

I have a 2011' Dodge 2500 Cummins and absolutely love it! I have had every diesel out there and after test driving a new duramax and dodge it was an easy choice for me.

Did you drive the Ford 6.7 too?
