Buying a diesel looking for info

Any good/bad with the 6.0 Ford? I'm looking at an 05 and an 07.

t500hps 02-06-2011 08:04 AM

I bought an 07 new and love it.......but I've only put 13,000 miles on it. The problems are with head bolts stretching under programmer boost (so I left mine stock) and the turbos used to stick from lack of use, so I drive it a little every other weekend during the winter.

seafordguy 02-06-2011 08:11 AM

There are several other threads on the first page or two here about the 6.0's - you might want to check them out....

Yo dude! I wouldn't worry about buying one at all! I just picked up an 05 Excursion with 6.0. Its awesome! Trans is much better than my 7.3, more power, more torque. Just make sure you leave it stock, unless you want to put the head stud kit in, EGR delete and bulletproof oil cooler (about $2500-3000). Get me a vin and I can have my buddy run the report on the truck, make sure it hasn't had any issues.

575cat 02-06-2011 08:59 AM

get an extended warranty, sooner or later you will need it !

POWERPLAY J 02-06-2011 09:20 AM

I have no interest in modding it. Just want something to tow boat. It will likely be a daily driver unless I dont sell my car.

05 Crew 4x4 leather 94k mi $21,000

07 Crew 4x4 Lariat 60K mi $23,000

These in ballpark for $$$? Any duramax I see has way too many miles and more $. I would like a Cummins but I havent had luck finding one lately...

THE 288 KID 02-06-2011 10:11 AM

That 07 sounds like a pretty good deal! Plus a Lariat, that sounds like a really nice truck.

Are these 250's or 350's?

SRW or DRW?

dodgezilla04 02-06-2011 08:21 PM

Theres a reason ford and international filed lawsuits and quit producing a 6 leaker after only 3 years........ Reliable they aren't. Headgaskets, turbo actuators, egr coolers......

I'm with this guy... but if you want the loud, "real diesel" sound, that's your pony.

You might want to listen to Jassman. He has lots of experience with all the light duty diesels. And if you want the "real diesel sound" the 12 valve Cummins is your pony.

250 SRW

cigrocket 02-07-2011 08:51 AM

Have an 05 Ford F350. CC XLT Dually. 180,000 miles on it, complete stock. Pulls the Top Gun Great. Tow Mode, and Transmission make the difference. Also 05 had the coil over suspension. Great Ride.

rumrunner29 02-07-2011 09:06 AM

They both sound like good deals, mine is a 2006 F250 CC SRW, with 103,000 miles and no problems. Nothing wrong with a 6.0 if you leave it stock...

30ctsutphen 02-07-2011 09:18 AM

I hear allot of people say stock 6.0's are fine but I see allot of STOCK 6.0's in my buddies service bay with head gasket, stud type issues on a regular basis.

The turbos sucked on them too. They are ab great vehicle once you work the major bugs out but IMO ford should have done that. Instead they pay for head gaskets and put the same **** bolts back in. DAHHHH

My buddy does a side deal with his customers to put in the head studs. Hes making ford look better everyday!

these are the mods you do day 1 IMO cheap insurance on a 6.0 ford. Once this is done and the turbo is changed they are a very nice vehicle:drink:

Magic Medicine 02-07-2011 10:01 AM

I have 175K on my 04, relative problem free operation. The 6.0 gets a bad rap because of misdiagnosis and "internet" hype. They are solid engines if you don't mod them and beat the crap out of them. For the record, I'm a service direct responcible for a GM store and a Ford store. U better believe there is a reason I drive blue oval!!!!

I guess even with all the diesels that have graced our farm or pulled our boats and snocross trailers, I'm still not left with enough experience for me to have a valid opinion.

But I do have a diesel Chevette... what you got to say now?...

I know of several stock trucks, not beat on with head gasket problems. In our area it's around $4k for a head stud kit in, EGR delete and new oil cooler. It doesn't seem to matter how many miles they go at, good buddy lost his on a 2004 at 73k.

ICDEDPPL 02-08-2011 07:51 AM

I`m looking for a new tow vehicle too, (in my price range )Chevy is ugly, Ford has a power choke, Dodge back seat is tiny.

I want a truck that has the Ford body and interior, Dodge motor, and Chevy Allison trans, the best of all worlds:drink:

I`ll probably end up with a V10 excursion, if I can find one decent mileage (very rare)

Dodge has a crew cab now that's as big as Ford's or GM's. Also the HUGE megacab, biggest in the class.

POWERPLAY J 02-08-2011 07:02 PM

Both Fords I was looking at are a no go but still for sale. The Dodges are all sold within a day or two of listing! WTF??? I have a little more than 2 months till boating season and have expanded my search to 1000+ miles for what I am looking for! I have honestly called on 15 trucks in the last few days and they are all sold just after listing, I had no idea it was going to be this difficult...

I called my dealer buddy and he doesn't have any diesels in stock. Said they are selling like mad right now. He's been trying to get me to sell our 2008 Duramax, might not be a bad idea. I kind of want a DRW ext cab GMC anyway.

I didn't care for the plastic on the hood of the Chevy, do you like the GMC any better? Or is it the body panels you don't like?

THE 288 KID 02-08-2011 09:17 PM

Clean diesels sell fast

I have two 7.3's....... you can't kill those babies! Great truck and engines.....

SS930 02-15-2011 10:08 AM

The 7.3 is a great engine, no doubt about that.

45sonic 02-15-2011 11:21 AM

I've got a 2004 Ford F350 dually crew cab diesel with 110K for sale. Factory engine warranty til 7/11. All the issues with it have been fixed and it runs and pulls great.

Asking $18500

THE 288 KID 02-15-2011 11:23 AM

Seen a few Duramax's for sale on my drive home from saginaw today. Also seen diesels 3.55$ a gallon Lmao. Trucks might start selling slower so you can get in on the action now!

Can always drop a Cummins in it, but I think most guys just fix what goes wrong on the 7.3...IMO if you're towing heavy, the Cummins is the motor to have in Class III.
