Trade 06 Duramax or keep it?
Been daily driving a GMC 06 Duramax 2500HD crew cab longbed single axle since it was new. Love the damned thing, best truck I've ever owned. It rolls on 22" wheels, black with tan leather and fully loaded. I still get compliments on it regularly.
But now it has 88k miles on it. And even though I still like the 'Classic' body style, I guess its getting a bit dated. Last year of the old body style with GMC I think. So what to do? I own this thing outright, no payments. New one (or perhaps dually) is $55k. Money isn't really the issue, but its still money spent if I buy a new one. And lets face it, I will sooner or later anyway. It runs great, no issues. Ever. It tows a twin engine 29 Fountain, so is plenty enough for my boat although I'd probably get a dually next time in case the boat 'grows' :D Do I keep driving this thing or trade now? Any thoughts or knowledge on how long this current truck will just keep on rolling everytime I turn the key? Is my resale going to disappear as soon as it hits 100k miles? Its probably worth $23k, maybe $25k now I think. I'm not normally so damned indecisive. Just really like this truck and don't want to get into a 2011 for no reason, or be disappointed. To make it worse, I can get a deep deal on a Ford through my relationship with them, but the current truck has me sold on the Duramax / Allison combo. Help a guy make a decision? Jeez, I sound like my old lady trying to find a pair of shoes... lol... |
Keep it, it's pre emission right?
Yes, has the LBZ engine. Last year of pre emission Duramax. 360HP / 650 TQ model, only available for one year (late 2006 and 2007 in the 'Classic' body style).
Buy yourself a nice daily driver car and park the truck unless needed. The truck will the a hit at 100k. Diesels are hot now in the end it's your money.
Keep it and buy a car of liking to go with it? I kept my truck and added a sports car. Was tired of spending $45k every two years on a truck that was seeing mostly just highway with no towing.
Buy the new Denali 3500 and don't look back! I want one, but our 2008 only has 21k on it and can't buy one w/out a crew cab.
Keep it and get the new Camaro ZL1 that is coming out next Spring! Plus, they will probably be updating the trucks again in the next couple of years!
IMO, you're nuts to get rid of an LBZ Dmax.
Lbz is the most sought after Duramax to date. Up here in Michigan dealers are still asking and getting in the 27-30k range for a truck like yours with even more miles. If you get rid of that truck you'll regret it Mr.
if it was any other year I would say go for the 2011 .i's an encredible machine but given the 2006 lbz deal its a tough call you will not have any issues with that engine for alot and i mean alot of miles . having driven a couple of the new fords im not sold on them. if you drive a 2011 gm you will want one. but there is nothing wrong with the one you have . enjoy either
Why upgrade if you don't have a burning desire for a new one? Drive it till the wheels fall off while you save up to pay cash for the next one. My opinion anyway.
I've got a 2005 Duramax (lly) and am in the same situation. It's paid for, gives me no trouble and got 18.5 mpg on a road trip to FL last month. It's my daily driver.
I'm keeping this phucker until it dies! :D |
i have an 2002 duramax with 212,000 miles, runs as good as the day i bought it! but i love the new bodystyle
I'm with OldSchool, I got a 2004 GMC Dmax that has 60K miles and has been paid for for years. However, I got me a beater for commuting and only drive the truck on weekends to tow the boat. I plan on keeping it til it dies (or I do). I do like the 2500HD Denali though (except the $65K price tag!)
I've got a 2001 3500 gmc duramax, and it's nice, but i got better mileage with my pre emisson 2006 lbz. I'd keep the 06.
I would Keep it. Sounds nice, custom, plus its the best year made. The new trucks are all awesome minus the emissions. You could use the money you save on upgrading your current truck more. Add some billit to the trans, fuel pump, tuner, air intake, turbo, cp3 pump, exhaust, suspension (at least nice shocks), in dash DVD navagation, some nice focal speakers and amp, etc.
Please don't get a dually when you do upgrade, you really don't need it. Unless your towing a 50' on a tilt across the country every week! |
id keep it. if you get rid of it, you'll probably regret it. Especially since you love it already. I have an LBZ with over 100k and love it. no problems at all.
Keep it or pay out the ying yang for a new one.
I've been trying to find a used, reasonably priced d-max for quite some time and gave up...... Instead, now I'm looking for a house on the water with a boat lift. If that wish comes true I'll sell the 2500 Burban and buy a daily driver. I haven't had a car payment since 2006/7 and love it! |
Def don't drive one of the new GM's or Fords though, you may end up buying one when you see how nice the new trucks drive and quality of the interior lol. No joke, these new trucks drive unbelievably nice for their size now. My friend had an 06' with the LBZ and I told him the same thing, he ended up testing an 11' F-350 and GMC and came home with the F-350 lol. He really didn't need a new truck but it blew him away how nice it was.
New anything is always nice but nothing beats FU money in the bank.
I love my 06 but i would love to change the front end to the new body style.
All you guys wanting to upgrade and change the front end to the new style, I have the new style! And no one compliments it when the boat is in tow(or not in tow)!!! Just tow your boat!!and all compliments or questions go directly toward the boat. "sharp boat", "how fast", "how much gas it burn?" bottom line, just tow the boat and you'll get compliments.

$500 exhaust and $500 programmer and you can get rid of the Diesel Particle Filter or the urea, I did, and it's stout with the programmer.

My sentiments exactly! At 88k, it isn't even broken in yet. My '07 lbz dually has 89k, and I plan to keep it til it dies. |
I love my 06 Duramax too! LBZ and no emissions is great!
If you get anything newer you will have at a minimum DPF and new add eurea to the mileage killing emissoin system. I like the feel of the new seats compared to these in my 06 much better but that "paid for" feeling is great!! P.S. I went with the DRW this time and absolutely love it. Once you go DRW you won't go back after towing with it. Sorry to add another dilema....................... SRW vs DRW???????????? |
I too think you should keep it, emissions suck, although my buddy had a new 2500 denali and I gotta say I'd give my nuts for one of them

the frame and tranny is beefier, and they have upped the tow ratings, but my 2006 with a chip still had more grunt. Keep the 06! |
Thanks for all the input guys, much appreciated.
Looks like I'm keeping it :) |
2004 Crewcab long boxLB7 i know its different but its at 170k, still daily driver in the winter and its pulls 10-14k 3-6times a month....love the truck and now working on new diesel i wouldnt get on. To many emissions and bull**** that kill the mpg and power. You would be shocked knowning

I was planning on keeping my 06. 130k miles and only opened the hood to put new batteries in twice.
But, if they build this truck I might change my mind:drink: http://motorcitytimes.com/mct/2010/1...ll-terrain-hd/ |
yeah I would hold on or trade for newer used. I have a felling GM going to rededsign soon or they should. Their current design isnt bad but its four years old and needs a little something. But they will probably repower soon due to fords new engine.
And you dont need a dually it would be overkill for that boat. 2500 is perfect. thats what i use on my 29 fever
