This is exactly how mine is....
You'll hear it more if you have the button in Tow..

I run a PPE tuner. It makes the trans shift MUCH better.

Mine's an 04 with the older 5 speed. Obviously you won't hear anything if you get close to hwy speeds.

Love the tranny but hate the way it shifts. It's almost like they didn't finish the software and just left it where it works right "most" of the time.

Thanks for all the posts, guys, really appreciate it. For what it's worth, I pulled my 38' Scarab to the lake (170 miles) this weekend and it didn't skip a beat. I think the local shop was fishing for some business...or, they're not used to working on anything but mini-vans...

Griff - I've got about 30K since the last transmission flush so maybe it wouldn't hurt to do it again.

The early 5 speed allisons did have whine noise. More noticeable with gas engines. Nothing to worry about.

I've heard of more transfer case related noise than anything. Merchant Automotive in zeeland Michigan has a cure for it I believe.

My 06 is quiet but I recall some bulletins at the beginning of the Allison use qualifying some "normal" noise. There was some whine from a fluid pickup issue on start up but not a problem.

The pan will tell the rest of the story. If it has debris in it there is reason to look further, if there is normal gray matter and nothing else the noise is a non issue.

Good luck with the good truck.
