What tires?

My trailer tires are 12 years old and although they look ok are past when they should be replaced. They are radials, ST225/75R15, Tow-Master brand.

What brand does everyone like? What should I stay away from?

Thanks,

I just put four tow masters on the trailer for my cc on the way out of town this weekend, the four goodyears looked great had plenty of tread left, but I had one delaminate about four exits northbound and was not taking any chances.

Tirerack.com has great prices on tires.

For the size you have, I'd put some Goodyear Marathons on it and not have to worry about them.

Griff 05-31-2011 12:56 AM

Discount Tire Direct has the Good Year Marathons in that size for $108 each shipped to your door. I should have 2 showing up on my doorstep tomorrow.

Check the load range of the tires, make sure you don't go lighter.

True but by the time you factor in their shipping they arent any better than anybody else.

discount tire is pretty good and fast shipping. Found a couple for you, dont know if you need load range E but I would reccomend it, the first tire is a carlisle. Me personally if you have a boat that weighs over 5 grand I would go with an E, because by the time you factor in trailer, fuel etc, your getting up there

here the tow master load range D, if your under 5 grand then these would probably work. Also keep in mind how many axles you have

Padraig 05-31-2011 07:29 AM

It is a Velocity 280 with a two axel trailer. The original tires are D rated and while I never had any problems I am thinking of going with E rated as the dry weight of the boat is 4,800#.

Thanks,

Thanks,

It seems manufactures like to get away with giving the smallest tire available I would go E they are not anymore money. Your boat weighs 4800 plus 2 for a trailer, than add gear and fuel you could be close to 8-9lbs. GO E, those carlisles I posted would work great.

I was relieved when I ordered my new trailer and the guy said it would have Marathons....search Carlisle tires in this fourm.....I seem to remember some real horror stories.....

Downtown42 05-31-2011 08:14 AM

+1 Goodyear Marathons, avoid Carlisle tires.

Had two Carlisles blow within 24 months of taking delivery of the trailer. Just blew out with a "pop" and gone.

My marathons have always held up.

had terrible issues with titan trailer tires load range E were absulute junk...they did refund my $ for all 4 I bought...did not cover sitting side of I95 unloading race car, 2 change the 2nd tire in the same day while trying to get to atco NJ !!!!!

Padraig 06-04-2011 09:28 PM

My local Goodyear dealer told me that Goodyear no longer made Marathon trailer tires. Offered Tow-Master. Is this true or is he blowing smoke up my a**?

Thanks,

I think, by law, tires need to be changed every 6 years, due to dry rotting.:eek::eek:
I've had Marathons, and they've been awesome! I just replaced two last year, so, if they've discontinued them since last September maybe, but sounds like hes blowing smoke!

I didn't see any marathons in load range e just d..... Does that just mean they are currently sold out of them or were you speaking of ordering one of the other loads?

outriggers 06-05-2011 09:54 AM

I took 5 brand new D tires off my new trailer and put Maxxis E on. So good so far. Doug

A buddy tells a buddy and thats how things like this start. I lived in MI and never seen that, and like I said how do they enforce it, pull you over to check your tires. I now live in NY who has inspections and there is no expiration date, they just do the standard penny test. But with that said you probably need tires after 6 years depending on rot and usuage.

PLUUUUUUS 3
2007, New rear CARLISLE "D" tires. 100+- miles one blew. Just blew. Boat, trailer, truck flipped, boat /trailer totaled, the rest is history. I have a tought time going after Carlisle, since I have no tire parts. The tire just dissintegrated.

Same here... I had a brand new Goodyear that had tread separation in only a few months that gave us $1500 worth of trailer damage!! Goodyear was wonderful and stood behind the tire but I decided to go with the Maxxis E rated tires after that.

Thanks,

Goodyear Marathons are great tires. As has been said do NOT get Carlisles.

UrbanDisturbance 06-15-2011 12:59 PM

I have had Goodyear Marathons, Carlisles and Maxxis 225/75/r15 tires on a tripple axle trailer with a 12000lb boat on it. Maxxis (Lead Range E) is by far way better than the other two. When I turn, the Maxxis has less fold and I have not had one problem with them since I purchased them 3 years ago. Had 2 blowouts with Marathons in one year. With Carlisles, I had 2 tires with bulges on the sides within one year.

CrownHawg 06-15-2011 02:15 PM

When I bought my boat last year the trailer had 2 Marathons, 2 Maxxis and 2 Hercules. Towing it home from the dealer the two Marathons turned to mush. It I immediately replaced the Marathons and the Hercules with Maxxis load range Es. I just ordered 2 More Maxxis Es and will use the old Maxxis for spares. With three axles, I will be carrying 3 spares for extended trips.

baja pete 06-15-2011 03:03 PM

I just put on 6 new Maxxis load range E.
