Coating for Bunks
 

I just got most of the trailer stripped down tonight. I have to redo the bunks . I want to get some new 2X6 and coat them with some kind of sealer then cover them with carpet I don't want water to get into the wood. I am in the sticks there is no marine grade wood anyplace just want somthing I can brush on to protect the wood and will last a long time.
Any advice? On a budget here guys business is slow right now. Thanks:evilb:

Maybe Thompsons sealer used for decks but it should work, but dont know how long before you need to reapply

Myco recommends just plain Pine. That's what I went with when I redid my Myco.

Another OSO member is also a major Cypruss harvester including a mill in his operation. He told me that just plain Pine is good as well.

You should get 8 to 10 years out of pressure treated pine 2x6's. If you want to coat, and I don't think you need to, buy the dryest boards you can find, use an oil based exterior paint (deck sealers are typically water based and if they are exposed to saturation they will loosen and disolve), but only coat the area under the carpet. Leave the bottom of the board bare and do not carpet the bottom of the board. You want the board to be able to get air and dry out as you will never keep all the water out.

So what I am getting here is just leave the wood natural and don't putt any preservitive on it? It seems like with natural wood being soaked in water once in a while then drying out that it would rot out? Its like protecting your deck on your patio I just don't know I am not a expert on wood.

Just use some CCA treated pine. It will probably outlast everything else on the trailer.

Exactly. by the time the wood rots, your trailer will be a pile of rust.
