Been shoppin 911's also. What are some things to watch for?
What is considered high mileage.
Really like the fat rears. Are those only turbos?
Lookin for some education. thanks

I really don't think mileage plays a huge part in the years to 1989 from what I've read. Service records are key.

I did talk to Artie (RT930) yesterday. He is a wealth of info and gave me a couple connections to check out.

As far as the fat rears go.I had a friend that had an 85 or 86 that was called a turbo look. It was a factory wide body with all of the stuff of a turbo except the motor. Other than that I know nothing about porsche's but I do keep looking at them and at some point I will break down and buy one.

Best advice: Go drive a 20+ year old sportscar, the fantasy maybe better than the reality!

I love the late 80's 911's but the non-turbos were 214 HP in the last generation, had no abs brakes, no power steering and gun slit a/c vents that barely cooled the car (when new!).

I recently drove a 88 911 Cab and was stunned how old, slow the car felt, keep in mind everything today is 300 HP+ so 214 is not exactly fast anymore.

The turbos are cool but really not worth the maintenance for the extra few HP (265 is what I recall until 91 it jumped to 315). The cars are still expensive to maintain and the parts are just as expensive as they were 20 years ago.

The C2 cars of late 89-94 were vastly improved (better a/c, ABS brakes, power steering etc). The 993's from 95-98 were the last air cooled cars (collectors love them) were then replaced in 99 with the 996's which were water cooled and though not great looking are definitely the best bang for the buck. The 997's from 2005-current are the best looking, a 4.0 GT3 is rockstar but for 130K+ it should be!

None of these places tend to stock beaters but you can look/educate yourself on the different years/models.

PS: After 1974 they started galvanizing the body panels so rust is less of a concern on a newer one than previous years but they can get rust in the trunk (front bonnet) from the battery corrosion.

Cig3: OK, the boats not enuff work so you want to buy a 20 year old German Sports car that parts are notoriously hard to find and expensive when you can find them.

oh.. the best part...

Take a 911 into a curve at power and let the the throttle off... Look in the rear view mirror cause that's the way your heading ... BAKWARDS...

Trailing throttle oversteer is a well known phenominum in these cars
