Transom Straps
I was wondering which transom straps you guys recommend or how much breaking strength is neccesary for a 26 baja outlaw. Im a bit confused on how much breaking strength I will actually need. Im guessing my boat weighs approx 5600lbs with fuel. Therefore, do i need a breaking strength of 5600lbs or something much less? Thanks for your help.

Check the internet. I used a company called Ratchet Straps USA. They were very helpful and custom made all the tie downs for my Formula. Price was very reasonable considering the quality of the product.

Thats a good question. because I would think you would need just enough to keep the boat on there and from moving which will require less weight than what your boat weighs. but if that boat really moves around that means its coming off the truck or flipping the truck, so either way your screwed. I dont have straps on my 29 and see a lot with out them. DOnt know if some people have some advice on this.

I just did a quick search on Amazon and they have many brands of tie down straps most of which do not mention breaking strength. Of the few that did 2500 #s was the most I saw. At the site "08 fastech 29" recommended, Rachet Straps USA, they had straps that were more that up to the task with 3" and 4" straps available. IMO if you were ever in an accident having your boat properly strapped could mean the difference between the boat staying on the trailer (say in a spinout) or worse yet heading through your truck! A fellow who was working on one of my jetskiis didn't take the time to use the tie downs and the winch rope broke. My ski came off the trailer on the freeway! The dealer (a great guy) had to pay over $1000 to have the hull repaired and blueprinted. Straps for me baby, even in the driveway!!

I have used these for three years now. They work great for me.

I use the 2" webbing with the snap hook that are in the link above. I picked mine up at the local Rural king. I have to use the snap hooks because the J hooks are a double J and they don't fit in the pre drilled holes on my Eagle trailer.

Remember if you are in an accident and you hit some one and it is a 2 G stop your boat now is going to weigh in at :eekdrop::eekdrop::poopoo: |

race car straps..

I use 4 car tie downs too. I ordered mine from Summit racing. I think the ones on the front are more important than the ones on the back. i love it when i see a 40+ foot boat with jon boat straps on the transom.

As said, the forces in a collision are huge. No reasonable strap will hold that force, let alone the rear d-ring/swim platform the strap is connected to.
The main purpose of straps is to keep the trailer and boat connected so the load acts as one. Ratchet straps are ideal vs the simple lock over type but if you are the in hurry/lazy type using what ever will be used more frequently is better in the averages game than a heavy duty style that is infrequently used. A decent 2" strap is fine. The chances of an S-hook having a problem on the transom are minimal but more solid hook styles are a relatively cheap upgrade. Dont over look the bow strap. Illustrated by boattnt. It makes a noticeable difference in keeping the bow planted solid to the trailer. The recovery strap only exerts horizontal pull. The safety chain many use has its purpose as a quick piece of insurance against the recovery winch failing when leaving the ramp but does nothing to secure the boat. |

I like those sleeves! Would save me a lot of time trying to keep a towel in between there.

Strapping
Cargo securement is a must! During my career, I have seen too many incidents where loads come off of trailers (including boats). So many boaters are neglegent in this area of highway safety. Check out AWdirect.com for your strapping needs. I use six straps, item #TP35B. One on each transom hook to the trailer and four up front from the bow hook. Two of the bow hook straps attach forward of the bow hook and two attach rearward of the bow hook at the trailer attachment points. This prevents fore and aftf movement of the boat on the bunks. The transom straps provide dowward pressure to keep the boat stationary also on the bunks. Each strap has a working load limit of 3670lbs. Check 'em out....

Whats the diff in work load ratings?? http://www.awdirect.com/liftall-twis...uck-tie-downs/ 10k rating http://www.macscustomtiedowns.com/product/112/TieDowns http://www.macscustomtiedowns.com/ |
working load limits
Manufacturers typically rate securement devices with the nomenclature of "working load limit (WLL)". This number is 1/3 of the breaking or tensile strength of a securement device. All regulatory rules use the WLL number to specify tie-down requirements. Manufacturers always recommend that usage requirements do not exceed the WLL.

I don't know about you guys but, my bow eye/U-bolt is only so big (27' Boat) I don't really see how you can do 2 straps pulling forward, 2 pulling backward .... and have the winch hook contacted also - That's 5 hooks attached to the bow eye.......... I'd really like to see a pic of that massive bow eye.
I almost forgot add a safety chain also. :eekdrop: |
strapping
Disconnect that large winchline hook. The flat snaps on the rachet straps fit just fine. You might use an "in between" hook on a smaller bow hook. Standard formula bow hook configuration. I am not picture savy on posting photos here.

wonder how much load/lbs it takes to pull OUT a boweye????

I actually run 2 straps in front going back and the winch strap. Nothing wrong with 4 though! |
