I would have said the 7.3..the later years..but now with over a 100k on a 6.7..I prefer this motor. Quietier, way more power and Torque, and the fuel mileage is excellent.

I was in the same dilema, the F150 I used to tow your boat with was not up to the job for the new one. I do like the Dodges but settled on the 7.3l Ford from a buddy who I knew took great care of it.

Yeah well I would have loved to buy a brand new truck too but some people have things called budgets.: cool-smiley-027:

Another vote for a 7.3. My 2000 F350 has 215k on it. Couldn't be happier with the performance and such low maintenance.
It just starting to leave a quarter sized spot of oil in the driveway. Needs turbo pedastal seals, and after reading this.... a cps in the glove box :) |
Don't be intimidated by the rod material change in the 7.3 after 2000. Everyone brings this up, but I've not heard of, nor has anyone been able to document any failures of the rods in a 2001-2003.
And yes, the Walmart greeters are gone, but the 7.3 isn't ancient history, at least not yet. I'm not made of money either, and a new truck at $60K isn't even remotely in my future. I only use my 7.3 equipped diesel for towing and, it doesn't see winter, and will continue on for some time to come. They are extremely reliable. Jim |

I've been searching trying to find out what years were mentioned to have the best diesel engines that Ford built (and what the engine was).. I've been toying with picking up a used diesel to tow. Can anyone tell me which one it was, before all the issues started coming up with Ford?

None, Get a Duramax or a Cummins!
