2007 Silverado 1500 for towing
I have a chance to buy my friends 2007 Silverado 1500. He has heavy duty tow package with different gears in the axle. He said its the same as the 2500.
Tow cap is 10,700.lbs. My question: i plan to tow a 1997 Scarab 29 twin with triple axle hoss steel trailer. Trailer title says 1200lbs weight. The boat should be 6500-6700 lbs. Even though i wont be over the tow limit Will this truck be adequate? |
I cannot comment on the capacity of the truck however I doubt seriously that your trailer weighs only 1200 pounds. My Venture triple axle aluminum trailer (for my 29' Fountain w/twins) weighs 1700. With fuel and gear I'm betting your Scarab (nice boat BTW) is closer to 7000+ trailer probably closer to 2500 pounds. Someone who owns one of these trucks will be able to tell you about its ability to pull around 9500#s.

I can tell you that I pull my 29 Scarab single with a 2003 1/2 ton Suburban. I did put a 6.0 in it and air bags on the rear. I pulled it all over the place on a 3 axle aluminum Venture until a couple weeks ago when somebody totaled the trailer for me. Now I am getting a big tandem steel probably a Manning so we will see how that works. Oh and the my Suburban has 285/75 17 tires so a little bigger than stock.

I think you'll be OK. I towed a 29 Baja OL on a steel Eagle tri-axle with a Chrysler Aspen. It was fine. Just make sure your trailer brakes work well. If he's your friend, hook it up and give it a try before you buy.

My aluminum tandem axle trailer with aluminum wheels, spare and disk brakes for a 28 A/T with a 10K GVW weighs 1560 lbs. (Certified Scale) Doug

I checked with my friend. He says the 1500 is a 6.0 liter Vortec max and he said when they put that motor in the truck they include the 2500 rear end. He did confirm it has 6 lug wheels.
He claims its got the same rear end as the 2500 and it has 4:10 gears. As for my trailer....Its all steel so Im sure it weighs more than 1200. Why would they put that on the title for it if it isn't correct?? |
I pull a 32 Sunsation on a triple axle trailer.Truck is a 2010 Crewcab with the 6.2 motor. You will be fine with that setup. The trailer must weigh at least 2000 pounds.

i pull my boat with trailer with my 1/2 ton 2004 gmc my boat and trailer loaded around 6500 pounds pulls ok useing 3rd gear unless i am on flat ground has the tow button but i have no confidence when it comes to braking new 4 wheel disc brakes but i keep plenty of distance with the cars in front of me on the highway i am thinking 3/4 ton next year it works but you are on the edge

The Vortex max truck is a 1500 series truck with the 6.0 engine and a bunch of towing options. That was the biggest of the 1500 series trucks and was meant for heavier towing. You will be fine. Those trucks do love to eat gas though. Jeff Wurl

S-10 should be plenty buddy!

my tandem axle steel trailer for my 29 fountain weighs around 25oolbs cant imagine that trailer is any less somebody just put less weight on the title to escape the tax man at the DMV. I would have it weighed and when you register it get it correct, not something that I ever seen get looked at but get into a wreck or that one THAT GUY for a cop and youll be into a ticket. For the truck you should be fine, I would think that boat and trailer is in the 9500-10k range with everything. I tow my 29 with twins with a F150 and it does fine although I have a 11,300 towing capcity. So its not going to be something to throw 6 guys in the trucks with tons of gear.
The thing with our boats we are just on the Cusp of capacity but with proper care in loading you will be fine, I would avoid diesels at all cost, although that 6.0l gasser is not going to be any kinder at the pump then a diesel. |
My understanding is the 1/2 ton "HD" trick had 8 lugs if it really is a 3/4 ton diff. That was one of those "best in class" deals where GM was pushing numbers for class bragging rights.
The 6.0L can do it OK with 4:10 gears. If the wheels are 6 lug I would stay conscious of those limits. Oh and don't be afraid of diesel. I just went from ATL GA to Lincoln Ne and only stopped twice for fuel; I've never had a gasser do that well. The diesel per gallon cost was more but I bought a LOT less diesel than I would have gas which resulted in cheaper total fuel cost for the trip. |
I pull a 30' Cat (Dry 6200lb), 120 gal fuel on a steel Heritage trailer (brakes on all 3 axles)
behind a 2007 Vortec Max Crew Cab 4x4 without any problems. Only gets about 10-12 mpg doing it but pulls and stops fine. |

The heavy half tons labeled 1500HD I think 2000-06 were upgraded to 8 lug, then GM came out with the Vortec Max package, it does have 6 lug wheels 6.0 and I am not 100% sure on the 07-current they could have 4.10 rears, I know I shopped a 06 b4 I bought mine and it had 373 rears. I didn't buy it because it was black, nowadays I kinda wish i did with the 303, it would be just the extra I need. I'm also pretty sure the Vrtec Max package has bigger brakes but not 100% on that |
Check the thread at the top of the page in this section for actual tow capacities.
The truck is definately not the same as 2500HD. The boat and trailer will probably weigh in between 8 and 9k full of gear and fuel. |
Been looking at these trucks and they are rated for the 10,700 lbs of towing.
In 2007-2008, this was labeled as the "Vortec Max" package and came with the 6.0 Liter, 4.10 rear, heavier suspension, 4-wheel disc brakes, and the 4 speed auto. In 2009, it was changed to the "Max Towing" option and they swapped it out for the 6.2 motor, which is the same motor as Denali and Escalade. It's mated to a 6 speed tranny, and 3.73's... Same suspension and brakes. The 6 speed version would be my choice, just because it's a little better on fuel plus the 6.2 is 403 hp vs. 367. It's also over 400 lbs of torque. |
