New Manning...

4 Attachment(s)
Picked up my new Manning trailer for the Active Thunder on Friday. Ron was great to deal with, and had the trailer done WAY ahead of schedule.

Looks awesome, IMO. Aluminum, E over H on all three axles, LED lights, tool box, fancy five spoke rims.

Just over two weeks and I'm rolling south to bring her home!

Only problem was, the thing beat the snot out of me on the highway...need to throw some weight in the bed to counteract the bouncing or my brain will leak out my earholes before we get out of Illinois!

Nice,

But all that white stuff is making me chilly.

Can you ask them what vender supply the center caps for the wheels. They are 7000 lb axles because you got 8 lugs on them. I have been looking for that kind for over a year now with no luck. Search the Internet with no luck, even check Summit's racing site. They are 5 1/4 in diameter.

I've got nothing in my paperwork on it, so I'm not sure. Give Ron a call at 616-784-2228 and I'm sure he'll be able to tell you.

That's a really good-looking trailer! Why no drive guard? Just curious.

Chart 03-11-2013 10:57 AM

Take most of the air out of the trailer tires for the empty pull south. That will help with the bouncing problem. I once pulled an empty tri-axle trailer 1500 miles, and it bounced like a basketball until I did the following:

Your tires are probably rated for 80psi and are rated for +- 3000 lbs at that PSI. Your empty trailer probably weighs 3000 lbs on the axles at most, or about 500 lbs per tire. You can likely get by with 20-25 psi and have plenty of air volume to carry the load, not get hot, not bounce your trailer and truck, not tear up things, and actually track better.

Be sure to air back up before loading the boat. Do the same with the rear tires on the truck.

sommerfliesby 03-11-2013 11:35 AM

Thanks Chart...I will look into that for sure. I also had Timbrens put in last week...and it looks like they are too tall, so those are getting swapped out right now.

As for no drive guard...I thought about doing one, but the extra length it added to the trailer was something I didn't want.

Pulled my empty Manning to Florida last year. Had 8 lugs wheels, 7000lbs axles, I think I dropped the pressue down to 35-40 psi no problems BIG difference.

Sydwayz 03-11-2013 02:20 PM

If it were me, I would take the wheels off of the front two axles and put them in the bed of the truck.

Looks good Mike!

^^^^ +1 but im a tire guy also,,run a minimum of 35 psi or your trailer will end up like a ford explorer..

Just put your wife on your lap, and let the fun begin!

That brings up a good point, check your tires and hubs at each stop for unusual heat, a sign something is going wrong with the bearings, or too little psi in the tire. My rule: if you can hold your hand on the tire, and touch the hub, you are still good. (different tests, not at the same time).

Amazing trailer, what brand axles do manning use?

hammer01 03-11-2013 08:51 PM

I'd also be sure to hit plenty of car washes as the shixxx salt roads will eat up everything it touches. Are you going to dip it or are they lifting it out for you? Looks great buddy.

sommerfliesby 03-11-2013 09:08 PM

I'll dip it. Once in, once out. That'll probably be the exent of salt water it'll see in its life with me.

laszlo01 03-11-2013 09:13 PM

Looks great Mike. Manning built mine almost just like that one but with drive guards to extend it. You will love it great guy to work with.

Expensive Date 03-11-2013 09:47 PM

Looks great, I love mine don't remember it bouncing coming back from Michigan but mine is only a tandem.

My Eagle has the same wheels and center caps. Inside of my wheels have casting; MFG by MS. No luck doing a search though.
The eagle website list 5.15" dia SS center caps in both open and closed ends.
No pics.

MILD THUNDER 03-11-2013 10:27 PM

Looks great Mike. Looks like its a Torsion axle setup?? Be sure on your trip with the boat coming home, that your trailer is level. Torsion axles aren't forgiving in this area. What Im saying is, if the hitch is too low, it will put a lot of load on the front axle, and not as much on the rears. Too much and that can lead to tire blowouts. Vice versa if its too high.

Id definitely let some air out of the tires for running down to florida. 35psi should help it not be so bouncy. Now wetsand that baby and buff it out to a mirror shine!

I've never heard of Timbren before, but did some research.

http://www.timbren.com/

Mike, did you install them in lieu of airbags?

sommerfliesby 03-12-2013 07:09 AM

Yep Brian. Just figured a little stability couldn't hurt. Don Cooper (formerly of the Fountain Ju-wanna Racing Team) owns an automotive service shop right down the block from my business, and he recommended them.

The axles are Axis torsions. And yeah Joe, it looks like a 2" drop is gonna do the trick, as opposed to the 6" drop I had on the Fountain. Might steal BZ's adjustable height hitch for the FL run just in case...

Ha! I actually bought my own solid shaft 2 inch drop that I'll likely use...I'd grab yours as a "just in case." Thats what you get for leaving it here!

...as long as it's rated for 12,000+ lbs. Personally, I don't like the adjustable setups; too many points of failure. If it were me, I'd have a couple of solid options with me, and return what I didn't need when I got home. Someone pulled a few of the pins on the OSO hauler adjustable setup while at an event a couple years ago trying to set someone up for a disaster. Thankfully, it was noticed before departure.

If needed, there are plenty of hitch/trailer places within a few miles of Pompano if you need anything. I've sourced balls and drawbars locally a few times for customers/friends.

Without any first hand experience, they look like they are contributing to your rough ride with the unloaded setup; especially if they are too tall. They look like they would transfer way too much axle movement directly to the frame for my comfort level. I can see valid use if you were running bigger tires and were worried that bottoming out would cause interference and damage; but that's about it. Good luck with the setup and please provide feedback.
