2012 Ford 6.7 engine BLEW UP!!!!!
I purchased my metallic black, automatic 2012 Ford 4x4 Dually Extend Cap with the 8 foot bed and 6.7 diesel in April of last year. I have only towed my 15,000 lbs boat and trailer 200 miles. It towed it great, better than my previous Dodge. My ford truck has 28,000 miles on it, where 90% of them are highway traveling to work. My engine blew up yesterday, May 14, 2013. I started the truck, drove it for about a mile before I hit the highway. I gave it a little gas (NOT HAMMERED) to merge into traffic and BANG. I looked in my mirror and saw rubber and metal pieces flying all over the place. The engine stopped and I coasted to a halt. Not knowing what happened, I tried to start my FORD and the engine was locked up. I looked under my truck and there it was, oil pooring all over the concrete. WTF. The truck is under warranty and will be for sale after I get a new engine. Anyone interested? I have a custom stereo and a grill guard. I am going back to a Dodge and getting the Cummings again with the manual 6 speed. That is what I had before, but it got destroyed in a wreck. Great Truck.

So another brand is immune from doing the same?

Urban- Please keep us updated. I have been down on the Ford diesels with all the issues the 6.0 and 6.4 had. But I REALLY was impressed with the 6.7 and thought Ford had really stepped it up with the 6.7. I want to know if it was a casting defect in the block or ?

I don't know if you will really get the full scoop on what happened with it. There have been some rumblings, but very stifled, about the 6.7L blowing up. I don't personally know of any but there have been stories and I'm sure the engine assembly will go straight to R&D for diagnosis.
Ford put a strong effort into this design and incorporated the new graphite technology in the block so I would be very surprised if the block broke. I expect all the mfgrs will eventually use pressed graphite in their blocks. Cummins is solid and has more stroke that their peers but I am GM biased. Good luck with the truck. |

Wannabe However, looking at the volume of sales as a proportion to the number of "blown" motors, it's almost a moot point. I spent two years looking for my 6.7 as I wanted to wait for the "issues" to surface. Also, in comparison to the issues people had with the old Strokers, these are limited. The big issues that have gotten press on the interwebz have been blocked glow plugs and dropped valves. Like the poster before, no mfg is immune to issues when you look at the scope and size of production. What I have seen is that Ford has done a pretty good job in stepping up to the plate to rectify any issues. |
That really sucks. I have had both Ford and Dodge Diesels (7.3 and 6.7 respectively) and I had good luck with mine. I hope everything works out and they take care of you under warranty.

I like that. I needed a laugh. The dealership told me this engine has been around since 2011 and my truck was the 1st one they have seen with this kind of damage to the engine. At least I had over 145,000 miles on my Dodge before I wrecked it. No engine problems, but I did get a crack in my manual transmission housing that had to be welded. No trucks are perfect, but I think I would rather change out a transmisson than an engine when the warranty goes out. I don't trust FORD now.

The stories are out there just as they are with any other truck on the road.

Good points , i have 4 of the 6.7s in the fleet and not a lick of problems ,i'll keep my fingers crossed |
Sorry to hear about that! The 2013 and 2014 cummins are SWEET trucks, and yeah the cummins is AWESOME. I don't like my G56 (mercedes) 6 speed manual as much as my last cummins with the NV5600, but its fine.
Just FYI, you can get the 68rfe or the Aisin automatic in the 3500 SRW or DRW Cummins Rams. The Aisin might be an option for you. My buddy has a 2012 6.7 Ford that I have logged quite a few miles on and I still prefet the Cummins Ram. Good luck |
We have seen a few 6.7's with issues and they have all been top end related. With it being fords first diesel im still skeptical.
|
my fathers construction company has 3 2011 ford f450's with the 6.7 engines. Last year at around 15,000 miles dropped a valve and we had the motor replaced under warranty by ford. The other 2 trucks have been problem free. We have 30 ford trucks in our fleet and the worst so far are the 6.0 diesels which we have 6 of. They are all junk. We also have 3 of the 6.4 diesels which are a little better than the 6.0 but after this 2011 blowing up I think we are all done with ford.
|
This thread cought my attention and is funny to me. I spent three years in ford dealerships and now work at cummins crosspoint in Louisville lol. The only problems ever saw at the ford dealerships was out of the cab and chassis trucks.ford used a different valve supplier for the engines in those trucks and it has since been taken care of. That being said. All I do is work on blown up cummins day in and day out. Mostly n14s, isx, m11, etc. but we still do rebuild alot of B series stuff from dodges to tree chippers.

Wannabe Sometimes I wonder if the 6.4 carried some of the negativity over from the 6.0. Either way there are urban legends out there on any motor or brand. What it comes down to is, there lemons in every batch made. Guys that blow engines often times are over loading their trailers and drive like a race car, and more times than not there was some tune or mod added that isnt mentioned or is whispered under somebodys breath. I got out of diesel because I can do what I need to do with a 1/2 ton, but was looking at the 6.7 and I was skeptical on an engine that was just dropped out of the sky by ford only a year or two ago. |

This is funny He indicates that he hates this truck and has no faith in it so when he gets it fixed he is selling it. Then the next thing “Anyone interested?” LOL |
UPDATE ON MY BLOWN ENGINE: Just talked to the FORD dealership on my engine that blew up. My CRANKSHAFT BROKE. I am getting a new LONG BLOCK; nevertheless, I don't know when I am getting the truck back yet. I wonder if the crankshaft was made in China. Are all crankshafts forged? Maybe not. Anyway.....there you have it. KAAABOOOM!!!!! I will soon have a very nice FORD for sale with a NEW ENGINE. Can't beat that.:angry-smiley-044:

If i had the extra money laying around i wouldn't hesitate to buy it. It's not like a hidden electrical problem that only shows its face once in a while, fix it and it'll be just fine

I also own a cranked up 6.6L Dmax which I've blown 3 times, 1 crankshaft, 2 pistons. Someone wanna loan me their Cummins for a couple months..lol A little FYI for the NEW Dodge and GM lovers out there. My Dmax techie friend has replaced 2 "exploded" CP4 pumps on 2012 or newer models under warranty so far. Since Bosch requires a complete fuel system replacement after the pump failure, that's an easy 7-9k bill if your buying...GM, Dodge, and Ford all use a variant of the new Bosch CP4.. So place your bets.. -K |
Got rid of my 2011 6.7 Ford at 52,000 miles. 2 water pumps, $1,600 radiator, turbo hose that blew itself apart, and an EGT sensor that shut the truck down. I wasn't impressed with the "fix" for the 6.4 and 6.0
Now I have a Sport Chassis with a 8.3 Cummins and Allison tranny, problem solved. |

Pops has one too...in the shop 6 or 7 times a year for reasons other than maintenance. He's going Dodge next. If you have more money than brains buy a Ford or Chevy Diesel...otherwise Dodge is the best bet.....How many commercial trucks do you see running a v8 diesel......

I really want to know when someone comes out with a truck that has ZERO problems. Around here the 6.7s have been performing VERY well. Oil field work puts them to the test. Sure there have been a few failures, there will NEVER be a manufacturer that does NOT have failures. Sorry yours went down.

My buddies 2012 ford 3500 blew up after 50,000 as well. But he had a chip on it but it still blew up just like yours. But it don't matter what brand there all mechanical machine that all breack. I have a 2007 dodge 3500 with the 5.9 Cummings and that thing blew up as well. Injector failed
|
My brother's 2012 6.7 broke a crank when he started it in his garage, oil and parts everywhere. But Ford really took care of it, fixed the floor in the garage (epoxy-looks great) and the truck has been great ever since. I have Cummins, but I really like his Ford. Could happen to any brand, what I look at is how the company handles the problem. But I also understand how you could get a little uneasy about keeping it long term.
|
I have one and love it. Best truck I have ever owned. I am a wholesale dealer and I have had them all. Nothing compares to this 6.7. My best friend works for Volvo and they all have f550 service trucks that weigh 19000lbs and he runs the piss out of his and all the trucks have 100,000 plus and zero issues. You just got a bad one?
|
Having been a service manager for a large Ford shop in Tomball TX and the Dodge shop there as well before I just moved to Dallas I can tell you I've seen all of them blow up. The 6.7 PSD has by far been the best since the 7.3 but yes, when they go they "GO"... But most of the stuff we saw was very minor programming or turbo type issues. I have owned a 10 Cummins, 11 6.7 PSD, 12 6.7 Cummins and now a 12 6.7 PSD again (got hit by a drunk driver in the 12 Cummins) and love the Fords feel over the Cummins. Cummins had that nice low end grunt...but on the highway rolling down the road the Ford to me feels like it pulls effortless vs. the Cummins... But that is JMO and opinions are like a$$holes everyone has one. Then again I only get to see the "bad" of everything....

But as far as the 6.7l r&d, it started right around the release of the 6.0l ten years ago coined the "scorpion" if anyone recalls. Cummins might have a reputation but the but you can keep the cheap glorified shipping crate it comes in.
