Sunrocket24 Thanks When I bought the 402 I was searching the net trying to find info and kept running across these International hobbies rc boats. They were made in the mid 80's are fiberglass and gelcoat 57" long a 1/9th scale of the 402sr1, all collectors items. Had to have one. found a bare used hull, then the scale outdrives, striiped and re gelcoated the hull, painted to match the big one. everything hard to find and not cheap, and never did rc boat prior.Took a year but finally had it running at the lake this summer. want to get a video next summer of the big one and little one running side by side.

I have 32' CC and we fish it all over the mid-atlantic NJ, NJ, MD, VA & NC so we always have tide issues at ramps. We have a 4wd but towing with 2wd is easy!!!

Getting up some of the ramps for us is difficult, we switch to 4wd about half the time to reteive the boat, do we have to - maybe not. I just rather not have tire spin if I don't have to since we have 4wd anyway. I have had my share of very low tides and having to put the trailer off the ramp and into the mud/sand to drive the boat on and without 4wd we would have had to wait for the tide to come in otherwise.

We drive to NC in the afternoon, fish the next morning, get done fishing, load the boat, wash it and leave Oregon Inlet by 1:00pm the latest and are back in NJ that night so for us we don't want to ever waste time getting the boat out - that's just my 2 cents.

That's awesome!

I always use 4x4 at the ramp. Rarely ever need it, but the reason I do it is so that the parking brake holding power is transferred to the front tires as well. Once I'm straightened up and right before the boat starts going in the water, I switch it so 4x4 and finish backing up. Same thing when loading back up.

MILD THUNDER 01-06-2014 06:13 PM

I towed my boat with a 2wd Dually. I only had one time where I couldn't get up the ramp. it was raining out and just wasn't happening. A friend had to pull my truck and boat up ramp with his 4x4 truck. I have since gone to a 4x4 myself. One thing I didn't like about the 2wd, was the lack of 4low. I hated the sound of the engine lugging and trans slipping coming up the ramp. With 4low, she creeps right up .

That is amazing!! I have a big collection of vintage 1980-90's R/C boats (electric) and I know of International Hobbies! I never knew they made scale drives back in the day that is so cool!! Can't wait to see a video!

Sunrocket24 Thanks the outdrives were made by AMPS agnew model propulsion systems back in the 80's real hard to find.

Had a 2wd 7.3 Dually Stick.....pulling 11,000 out at a couple of different ramps.....had to have guys on the tailgate to make it happen...

Truck is gone now....4wd excursion 7.3 will never let me down at the ramp.

It's not that you need it everyday.... but one day you will

Just make sure those Ford front hubs aren't frozen and turn freely! Ive had to manually lock them before at the ramp

True, true.

They are vacuum operated, and can not engage due to getting grimy and seizing; or a vacuum leak--or a combo of both.
I have Warn manual hubs on mine now. They went on when the front wheel bearings and ball joints were done.

yep...all my ford did it...a couple of (gentle) taps on the solenoid usually returns everything back to normal...for a while.

I'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it

Ditto.

I've never heard anyone say, "man I wish I had gotten 2wd instead".

Not true. I've been stuck on solid ground wet grass before when towing the boat as well, and needed 4x4.

A little trick on a wet ramp when you are in trouble:
With a skilled driver in the truck AND boat, you can use the boat to push the rig up the ramp.
You have to know the ramp and have your timing down though. You need to pull the throttles back, shifters to neutral, and shut them down before drying out the impellers. We've done it before at the 14th street ramp in Pompano.

A few years back I towed a 19' Ski Centurion with a 1993 Toyota Camry. I used the same method to get up plenty of ramps. With the wife at the wheel of the Camry and me in the boat it worked great. Got a bunch of looks.

abmotorman 01-24-2014 07:03 PM

Speaking of getting looks. My first boat was a 295hp 1977 Larson with a 302 ford inboard. This baby haul a*s for what it was. Since I lived in apartment and only had one option as a tow vehicle. (my other car was a Pinto w/ a built small block) It was up to 1982 Z28 that I built a 350 cu. 400 hp engine for. (man i'm dating myself). Besides the obvious comedy of a 21 ft boat towering over this shiny red rocket. The harmony that came from the boat ramp as the exhaust expelling gurgle sounds as it enter the liquid wonderland alerting to the perfect distance to launch that beautiful brown turd. Man did I get looks. But I was floating and rocking the lake at 68 mph. To be honest, I'd do it all over again!

So yes, you can tow with a 2wd.

Sunrocket24 01-24-2014 07:56 PM

The big question is WHAT you are towing with 2wd? Before I had my boat I just had jet skis. I had a truck but I also had a 1995 Cutlass convertible and put a hitch on that. What is better on a sunny day than towing your skis to the ramp in a convertible? I got a bunch of funny looks for that! It was front wheel drive but at most ramps the exhaust and rear tires where in the water!

The people that utter these words are owners of the NP203 transfer cases, where R&R, chain, gearset, and bearings cost almost as much as the initial RPO code on the window sticker.

Right now, a 23' Stingray.... By the end of summer, hopefully a Sunsation Aggressor, Rocket, or comparable 24/7 with a Big Block. Beyond that, I'll be looking at a new (to me) Super Duty or Duramax.

You should be ok with 2wd with a 24/7 boat. I only used my 4wd a few times on the slick ramps back in MI when the water level was low with my 24/7. I bet I could have made it up the ramps in 2wd with my foot to the floor but when it started spinning I just put it in 4wd and drove out no problem instead of putting on a burnout show. I thought I would have a bigger problem down south here when the tide is low and more slick green slime but I have never had to put the truck in 4wd down here. Maybe fresh water slime is slicker than salt water slime?? oh no I think I just started a winter slime thread!!
