New ford gas or diesel ?
 
I currently have a 2008 f250 with the 5.4 and just think it's under powered. Boat is a baja 275. I'm looking into getting a new truck and wondering if the diesel is worth the extra over the new 6.2 gas. We have the new 6.7l in our work trucks and we tow are bobats with them all the time and I love the power.

Any input would be great

I think the 6.2 could get the job done, but that isn't really the question, is it.

You cant go wrong with more power and the 6.7 is an awesome motor. I think you have to decide if the power is worth the extra spend.

Having gone from big block Chevy's to Ford diesel's, no way would I ever go back. Go for it!

DIESEL! But I think you already knew that. You may get a couple people that say the gas engine, but that is because they haven't towed with a diesel. There is a reson that all semi trucks, farm tractors, heavy equipment, etc all have Diesel engines.

Well if the gas will handle it do it that way. The 5.4 is not their best engine.

2000 mile trip towing 33' boat with 2013 Powerstroke
I know people always ask for real world #'s from these trucks, so here ya go. 2013 f250 4x4 crew cab. 3.55 rear end 6.7 PSD.

Reset computer, set the cruise at 75 from Louisiana to Miami(not towing) and averaged 16.8mpg. I drove mostly through the night, so I rarely had to tap the brakes---was on cruise 98% of the time.

On the drive home I towed the Prowler. 33' long, 11' wide, very tall(lots of wind) and roughly 10-11k#'s. Reset the computer when I got on the turnpike and towed back to LA at speeds between 60 and 65. I did go a little faster through MS and LA where it's very flat. Average for the return trip = 7.1mpg.


I love this truck. It's extremely comfortable, rides well and is very roomy. BUT, the rear end is soft as a 1/2 ton. She squats like crazy and the boat pushes it around a good bit. My GMC duramax 2500 was a better tow vehicle, in terms of suspension, transmission, and brakes. It performed better towing plain and simple. For multi-use, I like my Ford a little better with the family, but despite the appearance of being bigger, it's not as "trucky".

Just my observations and opinion. Take it FWIW.

If we're going down the fuel economy road, let's use a real world basis for the discussion. Fuelly is a great website that aggregates real world MPG tracking.

2013 F250

Small sample size on the gassers but you can browse other years too. You get the idea I'm sure.

If you are going to use it for a daily driver-get the gas. If just for towing buy the diesel.

I drive they truck everyday. I've driven the 6.6 duramax in a 2013 but I like my fords. I don't do a lot of long distance towing generally under 30 miles except we want to go to loto this year. I think I'm gonna wait until spring and put my boat behind a gas job and see of I like it and if not diesel it is

Priced out two Ford F250s, one w/gas, one with diesel. The additional cost of the diesel and the additional cost of diesel fuel (about 80¢ per gallon here in Washington) made the crossover point (savings due to better mileage of the diesel) somewhere around 250,000 miles.

Have to figure in the diesel will make it to 250 k easily and still have a decent resale, and you would possibly have to buy 2 gas versions

yeah right......most Ford diesels can't hit 100K miles without something major failing........Your argument would be valid in a 7.3 Powerstroke but not a new one!
