EOH Brake Issue
I brought the boat home today. During the drive, the brakes were grabbing so hard the trailer wheels almost locked up. Output gain was set on 0.5 and the hydraulic pump seemed the be louder than usual. When I got home, I backed up while braking which seemed to help for a while but then it started again.
Any ideas what might be wrong? Dave |
Sounds like a controller issue, what kind do you have? Factory or After market?
I would start there, if it is not there then I would go over the wiring connections. I had a cargo trailer once that had a supply line on one of the axles that pinched just enough to chafe on a brand new trailer, every time the brakes were applied that one axle would lock up no matter what the brake setting was. It took the manufacture several hours to find it. Another thing, try finding another trailer with an EOH system and pull it and see if it behaves the same way so you don't waist time looking at one system that is functioning properly. Just my thoughts and hope this helps with giving you a starting point. |
The EOH system is Brakerite and the controller is the stock one in my Silverado 2500. Everything worked fine. At the end of last year.

Check with the dealership and see if they can test your controller. I'd start with the easiest and start eliminating, if your controller is fine then call Brakerite and see what they think. I'll be willing to bet they'll first say it's your controller, but if you eliminate it and tell them, they'll bounce back with then it must be your wiring. But who knows, maybe they know of the issue you're having.
If it is not a controller issue then I am still thinking it's a wiring issue just because I have dealt with a trailer that had one and it wasn't easy. Maybe others have some better ideas. |
What year is your Silverado. The stock controller in HD 2014 or older GM trucks do not have the correct software to run EOH, They changed it on the HD2015 models that just started to come out. My 2012 2500 wont even work the brakes on my boat trailer with EOH but it will work fine with just standard electric brakes. Talked to the dealer and they told me that I would have to disconnect the stock one and go with a aftermarket controller in order to work the brakes on my trailer.

I have one of those modules I'm interested in selling. I purchased it for my 2007 F350 to use on a Myco I was picking up. Turns out when I arrived the trailer had one on it.
If anyone is interested let me know. Brand new. |
08 fastech 292, did you ever figure it out?

Actually you can get a late model GM Truck w/ an ITB to work w/ a trailer equipped w/ EOH brakes by wiring in a pair of electric brake pads. A buddy of mine showed me how to do it & it worked like a champ. We both have Skater trailers, mine has a Carlisle brake system on it & there's something in the circuitry that has the brain looking for some sort of impulse / resistance that a pair of electric pads emits.
|
They both have to be hard wired in so neither are plug & play. Other than the 2 mounting holes it's a glorified brake pad in my opinion. We just tywrapped ours neatly underneath out of sight.
At least someone is offering a solution. Why GM doesn't update their controller is beyond me. My buddies 2013 F250 is plug & play w/ his Myco, no module required. |

You can wire in a light bulb, anything that has a draw. A bit shady tree for me, I'd rather have the module for 60 bucks and move on, just me though.

Not yet. Been traveling a lot for work but I'll get after it this weekend.

So here's the latest. I wasn't able to diagnose what was wrong and have been traveling a lot for work so I took the trailer to my local trailer mechanic. After several phone calls with Brakerite they say the pump is bad. New one ordered and should be back in business this week.
No reason given by Brakerite on why the pump failed after only three years. Dave |
I have a 2011 chevy duelly and factory controller works fine with my myco/break rite trailer.

Finally, after three weeks, the trailer is fixed!
The shop I use, had a call with two technicians at Brakerite who insisted the problem was caused by a bad pump. So a new one was ordered and installed but did not solve the problem. That was two weeks ago. Another conference call with another technician at Brakerite who said the circuit board was bad. A new one was ordered and that did solve the problem. So at the end of the day, I have a brand new EOH system on my trailer after a little over two years of use on the first installation. Disappointing that the system failed after two years, no warranty BTW. And that there was a lot of inconsistent advise from Brakerite. The good news is the 'bird will be on the water this weekend after a three week hiatus. Dave |
Thanks for the update and glad your problem has been solved.

You may look into relocating the unit up higher and more forward on the trailer. Even if it's 12" from getting wet at the worst boat ramp you use; one 23 year old rich kid numbskull going by in a full tilt loaded wakeboard boat, and your unit is toast again. |
