Holy crap, we don't have anything like that in Michigan. For personal use, we all buy the same annual tag for our trucks whether you tow anything or not and a one time permanent trailer plate based on the weight of the trailer itself, not the total load.
If you have a "D" plate, or higher class rating, you need to get annual safety inspections done, and display the sticker on the windshield. Boat trailers now need to be inspected as well. What a racket illinois has going. |
In a couple years you can have 0bama back and all will be sunshine and roses, lol.
to the op I think it dependant on what state he gets pulled over in, not to mention the state of mind of the officer that stops him . |
We have some different plate categories for trucks in VA.
Excise tax is popular in the midwest. In VA, we have personal property tax. All much the same thing. What you plate the truck for affects the plate cost. However, once you cross the line from what appears to be personal use to commercial use, the vehicle no longer qualities for personal property tax relief. Accordingly, your PPTX goes through the roof. You can't register an F-650 as personal use, but you can on a 1-ton and lighter. |
I was told to take a look at Ram trucks today so I went to www.ramtrucks.com and when going through their tow capacity calculator, it has a sliding scale for towing capacity. It is GCWR minus truck, passengers and gear equals towing capacity. Looks like Dodge as a manufacturer is concerned only with GCWR and not where it comes from. Seems simple and logical to me.

Bottom line:
If the law wants to investigate your setup, they can and will ask you to bend over and grab your ankles because they WILL find something to f@ck you on. Fixed it for you :D Just food for thought, I have never seen a manufacturer tow rating listed on the door jamb, only GVWR and GCVWR. Does the average law man or weigh master carry a list of manufacturer tow ratings or just check the placard? Not advocating hauling more than a vehicle should pull but look at MT case above perfect example of poor manufacturer tow ratings. In the end, if you get pulled over there are enough stupid laws on the books that than can find something to write. I know a guy who had his boat trailer registered through his business and upon getting stopped got a ticket for no CDL since his trailer was a "commercial vehicle".[/QUOTE] |
How come the GCVWR isn't always displayed on the door jam? My 2010 DRW CC 4x4 Duramax doesn't list the combined rating?
