Update: I found this little trick on etrailer.com:

It made everything work correctly. Not only does the MB not "enable" the lights and power to the trailer once it recognizes the circuit load...
...but it also automatically turns off the rear proximity sensors. This is actually a nice part of their feature that the US truck manufacturers could learn from.
*Note: You cannot just leave this adapter plugged into the MB when not towing. It will throw all of the "trailer light out" CANBUS errors on the MB dash warning system. Just add it to when you are going to tow.

FWIW, I also installed the Prodigy RF Brake Controller (wireless, radio frequency) system, and it worked great. HOWEVER, due to the MB's wacky trailer lights, even with the adapter, you have to use something other than the MB to pair the RF remote to the trailer. I used my Chevy to pair them, and then moved the RF remote into the Benz and all worked fine.
