Chevy 3500 or Sportchassis

So it's getting to that time that I need to buy a new vehicle. I'm trying to decide between the new 2017 Chevy 3500 or an older Sportchassis. New truck obviously has warranty and easier around town, but depreciation sucks. Bigger truck won't have warranty but I can fix anything wrong with it...it's more difficult in town and a little more headache as a daily driver. Split right down the middle. Truck will be a daily driver for the most part....thoughts and opinions

Go Big or Go Home ;)

Why would you want to drive a sport chassis as a daily driver? That would be a PITA!

TruxtonFox 12-07-2016 08:06 AM

My last truck was a 4x4 kodiak and I loved it, it was just rough as hell.....trying to decide, anyone know when the chevys come out

Sydwayz 12-07-2016 10:16 AM

I have limited experience with the bigger trucks, but what I will tell you is this:

The Sportchassis is THE best of the bigger offerings. This comes from a friend here on OSO who has a big truck custom shop & dealership, and literally has everything at his disposal. He tows show trucks, boats, including his 43 OL; and tons of other stuff.

Some of the bigger trucks have a significantly better turning radius than the 1-ton offerings from the Big-3.
Overall, you really are not taking up any additional footprint with a CC LB Sportchassis vs.a CC LB 1-ton; other than maybe a bit wider at the front. And, the F-650 is actually a hair shorter than an F-350/F-450.

Now, I don't think I'd want one of the bigger trucks as a true DD going where I go for business meetings, in the city, etc. etc. Even compared to driving my 2500HD or F350, I know I can get around and in/out of placers quicker in my "beater" MB E500.

I love our 9th Ram, 16 3500, so leaned towards shopping for a Sportchassis over the F650 when buying a second truck just cause I'm "anti Ford" but ended up with a Super Truck F650 and LOVE it! Driven two sportchassis and they just don't impress me like all the hype. And if they are not lifted like the P2XL they really don't give much WOW factor like my F650 does on Super Singles! I don't agree with Sydwayz that the 650 is shorter but it does turn decent. Kristy and I daily drive it and LOVE it! She won't give up the wheel.

Both are great trucks but it's hard to choose a USED truck over a NEW truck....

Both will tow excellent

To really get a nice Sportchassis or 650 expect to spend just as much or more then a new 3500, you get what you pay for and the cheaper ones are cheap for a reason.

Basically do you want to look "cool" or have a more comfortable ride, less maintenance, and a wrnty?

I've had OSO member "billy cully" 's F650 at my place a few times, and never lined it up next to my F350.
However, OSO member "excursion" was the one that gave me that info when he owned an F350 and F650 back to back; as to how they fit in his building with his 43BT.

That's the problem I'm running into, Ive got a bufget of around 60-75 and am waiting on the new L5P duramaxs to show up at the dealership. Ive got two sportchassis trucks (customers) that Ive been driving the past two days and the only issue that I am having with them is acceleration and drive-thrus. Other than that I like the ride. We live in a rural place, so parking spots are designed for dually trucks, the sportchassis fits just fine.

I looked at the f650 but I don't want a truck I have to climb up into, the FL is low enough I feel like I just step into. I have a Jag XF for city driving if I ever have to make that 1.5 hour commute.

I did look at the International MXT, but with no gooseneck hitch and 16K tow rating I wasn't impressed (or the stupid high pricing)

Towing a 30' Scarab....nothing too heavy

Again depreciation is the biggest Con of the Chevy

MonkeySea2 12-07-2016 11:23 AM

I'd personally go with the Chevy w/new L5P. Beautiful trucks and sill somewhat of a "normal" DD. I can't imagine driving a Sport Chassis every day just because of the massive size. I have a Chevy 2500 w/6" lift. After 6 years of daily commute, it did get a little old with the rough ride, fuel economy and the size.

TxHawk 12-07-2016 12:01 PM

If you aren't towing anything that a 3500 wouldn't handle with ease, I cant imagine driving a bigger truck. You mentioned acceleration. I have towed with the bigger trucks and get pretty irritated when I can't hang with a tuned 1 ton pulling a bigger load!

Whats this about depreciation? I am several thousand ahead on my 2500HD Duramax. Gotta buy nice used trucks!

TruxtonFox 12-07-2016 12:26 PM

I'd have to wait to get a used 2017....2016 would be cheaper but I want the new motor

I've owned all three and also had them as my daily driver. I don't go that far, trips to post office ect. My son still has my old 3500 dually. I'm in my second year with the sportchassis. Had a Kodiak 4500 before. traveling wise I like the sportchassis the best, most room better ride easier driving. I don't think you can make a bad choice with either they both are great trucks. Your personal preference will decide witch would be better fit for you. I have no trouble getting around town or parking with my sporthassis, it's kinda cool to be able to load up six and go to dinner in style.

I'm having a baby boy in the next couple of days, what about the ease of a baby in the big truck?

KWright 12-07-2016 04:40 PM

My 1 year old nephew gives it two thumbs up. There is a ton of room in the sportchassis, enough for all the supporting equipment for the little ones. plus you have the tv for their entertainment!

Its all in what you want (but what would I know lol) I love a Sport Chassis hands down best all around (medium duty size) trucks I have owned. I truly USE a truck and they have yet to dissapoint me. Air ride seats, Air ride suspension, Air ride cab and the plushest leather you will ever sit on how can you not like one, your basically riding on a cloud. As for a 3500 I cant knock them one bit, it will do everything with comfort and every day drivability and still tow about anything you ask of it. You are 100% correct on the loosing value ratio, the new 3500 truck will loose far more money far faster. The properly equipped Sport chassis is going to hold a strong value and last. Just one guys opinion.....

offshorexcursion 12-07-2016 10:51 PM

Its going to be hard to find a real Sportchassis thats nice enough for 75K, I can't stress this enough that you really have to spend some money, and get ALL the options, to get a badazz sportchassis or F650.

Again both great options but think you will end up spending more on the proper sportchassis

TruxtonFox 12-08-2016 06:37 AM

thr one I'm looking at is a 2007 fully loaded with 31,000 miles for 65k

Private sale through one of my customers.....there's a site called horsetrailerworld, they have a truck for sale section....I'm in the rodeo industry and these guys go through these trucks like crazy....if I pass on this deal I'll send you the contact info. But around here these trucks are a dime a dozen

offshorexcursion 12-08-2016 09:26 AM

Cool always nice to find deals!

What are the specs? Official sportchassis? Hauler body or pickup bed? Engine?

TruxtonFox 12-08-2016 09:39 AM

Its an 07 with 84" CA, official sportchassis conversion, rear camera and side cameras, hauler bed with giant toolboxes and storage directly behind cab, MB 330 engine

offshorexcursion 12-08-2016 10:37 PM

I don't like the MB engine to much.....

Hauler beds are really useful actually!

Air ride front? Most likely has rear?

Prob has Posi rear end?

Hopefully others can chime in with more info
