Trailering clips, transom saver etc?

Does anyone have a product they prefer besides a ratchet strap to hold the drives up and take the psi off the trim rams for long trailering trips? I'm headed to PA to pick up a boat I just bought and the owner ususlly puts a piece of wood between the front of the drive and the gimbal ring... I'm not going to roll like that.. I'd like a more conventional solution. Boat has twin imcos w external imco hyd steering and swim platform. The drives dont trim up ALL the way because of the platform but enough to get them away from harm thats for sure. I was thinkin two sets of the trailering clips and just cut them to size if need be.. I've read that some people feel these are not that great because theres still psi on the trim ram pins.. Thoughts or your preferences for a devise?

1"PVC Pipe. Make your own

I have never used any and nobody I know uses them either.

Most boats with twins, the drives are high enough that you don't even need to trim them up on the trailer. Just leave them down, and with external steering they aren't going to flop back and forth either.

I haven't seen any in 25 years

I ALWAYS used the trailering clips on my boats; for the last 15 years; and no issues whatsoever.

On my 37AT, the drive indicators were in the way on one side of each drive, so I just put the one clip on each drive. No issues at all over 12+ years of doing such on the AT.

I used the clips early on in my boat owner days. Then one day, in a hurry, I forgot to remove them at the ramp and wondered why my trim gauge wasn't reading correctly as I lowered (thought, anyway) the drive to start the engine and back the boat off the trailer. They've been sitting in storage ever since!

I could see that happening, but never had an issue with it. I have mistakenly started an engine once or twice without trimming down though.

I drilled a little hole at the aft end of each one and put a loop of 1/4 rope through it. This added the visual indicator to make sure I grabbed them, and also made it super easy to pull them off.

4 things to do at the rear of the boat when arriving at ramp:
1) Plugs
2) Transom Straps
3) Prop covers
4) Drive clips.

When I remove the drive clips and the transom straps, I store each side on respective prop covers and laid them in the back of the truck.

Thanks Fellas, appreciate all the insight.

I use them. Just some cheap insurance in the event that I were to lose hydraulic pressure and my drive drops and drags on the road

I had my routine down pat. Transom straps, trailer clips, and make sure plug is in. My father-in-law was with me and as I was getting ready to start my routine he yells at me that the guy ahead of us was waving us on as he was having trouble. So I got in truck and moved around to ramp and forgot to do anything. That meas the transom straps were also still in place! A guy on a jet ski, seeing the whole thing about to unfold, waited until I had a perplexed look on my face as to why the boat wouldn't come off the trailer and then shouted to me that me transom straps were still on. Another reason I hate jet skiers... :angry-smiley-038:

Did your trim indicators look like this?

Yes, exactly; standard Kiekhaefer stuff.
If you shave down one of the trailering clips, you can actually get it inside of the indicator and onto the ram. But I found that 1 for each drive was fine.

Ok, thanks. I've got 2 sets coming. Thanks for the advise.

With the picture you posted, I realized I lied above.

About 1" from the FORWARD/Lower/(closest to transom) end of the Clip, drill a hole about 3/8" in diameter, and tie a ~16" long piece of cotton string/rope though it in a loop. This will allow you to grab the loop with your hand, and snatch the clip off the ram quite easily.

You will more than likely have to trim the drive clips when they arrive to the proper length for your setup. Obviously, trim the flat end. Cut them about 1/2" shorter than full drive trim extension. Then you can install them easily, and lower the drive trim onto the clips to support the weight. When you are ready to remove, you need to bump the drive trim up, so you can remove them.

Of note: you don't want to KEEP your drives trimmed out if you don't have to; as it's bad for the belows. Once you get home, and park the boat until next use, pull the trailering clips. They rest nicely on the trim tabs, or you can use the loop you installed to hang them from the drive pins which also works.

Yup, I had planned on doing exactly as you said. I'm only using these for the trip home. I live 5 minutes from the ramp. The clips wont be on the rams again in the forseable future. Drives always get stored in the down position.

Yeah, their nothing too special, IMCO Xtream SCs, the cap cooler came on them std. The seawater pump on the engine pumps to them. I'll trace the plumbing if your really interested. I'm picking up the boat on the 22nd and driving 10hrs home. Hence the transom saver or drive clip question.

outonsafari 04-17-2017 07:16 PM

oh, my bad i thought they were oil coolers, thank you.

That's ok, you get a bye for having the most outstanding Avatars known to man! Did you sell the Flat Deck yet? I saw it on FB and threw some kind words on there..
