LoadRite Elite Tandem Brake Upgrade???
I have a 2019 LoadRite Elite Tandem aluminum trailer with 6000lb capacity. My boat is 4700lbs dry. Usually keep boat with 1/2 a tank. Towing with 2018 Land Rover Discovery Diesel with 7800lb tow capability, air suspension, and tow package. I have the capability of manual shifting for engine braking. The trailer has disc surge brakes on 1 axle. I will be towing up and down hills and from San Francisco area to Lake Tahoe so lots of up and down grades. Plenty of power to move things around uphill (440ftlb of torque) but I rather have too much braking power than not for the downhills.
Are there any recommendations on either adding brakes to the 2nd axle or upgrades to the brakes overall. It tows fine, nice and smooth, but with extended downhills at steep grades I would rather have the extra stopping power just in case on the trailer. |
I would add brakes to the 2nd axle and convert to electric over hydraulic

Is Kodiac good? Would add discs to 2nd axle. Any recommendations on the electric over hydraulic?

Kodiak is among the best. Either kodiak or hydrastar

Adding brakes to the trailing axle is a easy solution, also as others have said you will see the largest difference in also adding electric over hydraulic. This will give you the benefit of having brakes when backing down a ramp or needing to stop trailer sway. E-trailer and other internet companies will have everything you need to convert and add to what you currently have.

I just measured. I have 10" rotors on front axle only. Tires are 215/75/R14. I have the easy lube fittings. I have about an inch from caliper to rim so might not have room for larger rotors.
I'll look into the electric brakes. Looks my Discovery has round connector. Need to read manual about installing electric trailer brakes. I have a grease buddy. Does that look right inside hub. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...2db560ca7c.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...79d9587837.jpg |
Found a guy with same issue looks like pretty straight forward integration. Link in case anyone else needs it.

Agree E over H is best, but if you only boat in fresh then straight E is good IMO
Not trying to change your mind, but I had a loadrite for years, and its a ok trailer but not a great one. If your going to keep the boat a long time, maybe look at another trailer set up right. |
Ii get the ideaa. I had a tank of a trailer before. This one isnt as solid but not bad either. I wont be doing too many long hauls.

EOH is overkill for 6k load. Just adding brakes to the second axle should be plenty. I had surge drums on 2 axles on a 7k load and I could stop just as easy as the truck by itself.
