Rock Guard or Mud Flap Suggestions.
 

I have a painted boat and on my way to get a placed fixed from getting hit by a boat, my tire threw a rock up and put another place in the paint. Luckily it was close to the area being repaired.

I have a 2012 Silverado with factory sized street tires. After the rock chip I put the GM painted splash guards but I doubt they will be enough.

I want something additional that’s removable and don’t look too awful. I think $300 for the ugly rock tamers is a little high.

Anybody have these on a GM truck? Basically being one size fits all I’m concerned about how they will fit but I like the idea a lot. Husky is the brand.

I like this below for $100 (I think it would look okay without the reflectors) but they don’t make one to fit a 2.5” receiver (they have a hitch mount and permanent mount). I’m good at modifying things but I can’t find pics of the mount to know if I would be able to or not. Thanks for any suggestions.

I am running Rek Gen on my Ram 3500 SRW with lift and AT tires (tow machine); and F150 with wider/bigger A tires. I've been really happy with them. I too have a set of Rock Tamers, but I haven't used them in 15 years.

In the below pic of my Ram, they are the Husky KickBack flaps. I had to pull them off, powdercoat was junk.

I’m not crazy about the rock tamer style guards either so I bought some generic rubber truck flaps from northern tool for about $25. Haven’t put them on yet but I plan on just attaching them to my factory plastic flaps so they’re just off the ground. They’re wide enough to protect from my f-250 stock tire width.

I thought about that also. I’m wanting something detachable so I can take them off easily when I’m not towing. Wing nuts maybe?
I’m thinking about the generic flaps also for my trailer fenders because I’ve notice my back tires will kick up stuff also.

I get that Rock Tamers are not the most attractive, but I think they work the best and you only use them when you’re trailering, as opposed to a permanent mount with the other stuff.

...and the cost of the Rock Tamers is cheaper than the bill for the touch-ups to gell or paint, transferable from truck to truck and worth something if you want to sell them off.

I looked at them as spending money to save money, time and headaches over the long run but to each their own.

I agree with that. I am buying something. Just brainstorming. After looking at my truck more, I don’t think the husky detachable flaps will work. Not much room between the tire and factory splash guard to work with.

I found a few different sets that resemble the rock tamers that I like but they either don’t make them anymore or they are 2” only. Husky use to make a basic looking one (what I’m looking for) but that’s the discontinued one I’m talking about.

I’ll keep browsing. I’ll buy something before I tow again.

My complaint about the Rock Tamers was just how awkward and heavy they were. At the time I was using a WD hitch, an with that giant attachment to the hitch drawbar, it was a PITA to install and remove. I ended up making a "receiver" out of 2x4s on the garage wall, where I could back the truck in, remove the whole hitch and Rock Tamers assembly, and pivot it 90 degrees and place it on the wall. That was the best way to deal with it. But once I got a dually, I just invested in some long mud flaps.

The long flaps look good on a dually. Silly on a SRW. It was a huge step for me to put the factory splash guards on lol. I’m starting to become wise in my older (33) years.
