Super Duty Death Wobble?
Has anybody here experienced this?
I’ve had it happen 3 times, all at less than 40 mph and on paved but bumpy farm roads. Very aggravating and potentially dangerous if it happened at higher speeds in traffic. From what I’ve read Ford acknowledges the issue but has not began a recall/fix. |
This has been a known issue for nearly 20 years...so no, Ford is not going to do a recall of any sort. Dozens of articles on the web as I am sure you're aware. Basically though, from what I have read (admittedly just skimmed some articles), the issue is attributed to suspension component wear and tear or loosening of the track bar bushing, damper bracket, ball joints, control arms, and shocks/struts, so regular maintenance is the key to avoiding the problem. Ford recently recommended replacing the steering damper...which once again is a wear and tear item. These are VERY heavy trucks that simply put tremendous load on the various suspension components. Not sure how old/many miles yours has; I'd be a little concerned if this is happening on a vehicle with less than 50,000 miles, but totally understand if the 50K mark or more had been hit. I had a '92 1/2 ton Suburban for many years and rebuilt the entire front suspension twice in 150,000 miles.

It’s not just Ford, Dodge has had issues with this. Make sure all components are tight as stated especially the track bar. Have alignment checked buy good shop paying special attention to caster setting.

My 2017 F 350 only has 30,000 mi.
We have a 2019 F250 that has had the same issue. Over the last 20 years we’ve had at least 12 Super Duty Fords here at the farm and this is the first time I’ve heard about it. |
I have a V10 Excursion ( essentially a super duty underneath) and I experienced what I interpreted as the death wobble. It happens at about 30 to 40 miles per hour in the steering wheel almost shook out of my hands. It turned out to be a dragging brake caliper that heated and warped the disc. Replacing the caliper and rotor seems to have fixed the problem.

Good shocks, damper, and do a real alignment bringing the caster up over 3.5* and you won’t have an issue. I’ve had at least 10 super duties and never had an issue

Ive got an 05 F250 SD with 95k on the clock and its never done it.

I have a 2019 F350. The steering Dampener went bad and was replaced under warranty in a day.
|
2018 F-250 Lariat, 27k ish miles. Had it come up three times on bumpy back roads. Dealer did fix it but now the truck seems to have a little bit of a rake to it where before I’m pretty sure it sat very level front to back, but the ride is better and haven’t had wobble since so I’m ok with it. I also have had work/fleet f-250s for 10 years now and those seem to get it bad when alignment would go out, but I think all our work trucks come with heavier suspension up front for plowing even though we don’t put plows on and that makes it worse.

I talked to a Ford engineer who said the tire pressure is critical on the F250. Don't run anything under 65 lbs. in the front. Also as others have said the steering dampener can cause issues. I replaced mine with a Fox and have never had a problem 2014 with 126,000

Friend has a F450 Platinum and it has happened a couple times.
Dealer told him the tires were too chopped up/cupped, needed to be replaced.and it wouldn't happen again. He drives it daily but I haven't seen it up close to see if he swapped the tires. |
Had the same problem on a '17 F-350. Local off road shop suggested going to a dual Fox stabilizer. Problem solved. The factory stabilizer is too chintzy for the size and weight of the truck.

Had 3 SuperDuties, happened in all 3. One time hit a rough area on the highway thought and I was going to wreck. I put air bags on the rear to help with trailer tongue weight and this seemed to inadvertently help with the death wobble. I did the Rancho dual steering stabilizer and this worked. The only problem is that it wears the pump out faster. There is no excuse for Ford not taking care of this. If they cant fix the problem, they shouldn't build trucks.
The worst incident was when one of my tires developed a big bulge in the sidewall on the interstate. I was driving faster than I should have through the mountains of North Carolina and something started to feel a little off so I left off the throttle all of the sudden, the steering wheel started violently shaking and I was not in control of the truck. I thought I was going to wreck for sure. Luckily for me it occured in about the only straight stretch for miles. I just continued with no throttle and after I slowed down a lot I was able to get off the road. I thought I had broken a major suspension component, but it was just the death wobble caused by the tire imbalance. If you haven't had this happen on your Super Duty, you will. |

It looks like a solid front axle issue and highly associated with Jeep more than Ford.

Dual Damper
FORD DUAL N3 STEERING STABILIZER (05-21 F-250/350)Rough Country.comOEM steering damper is not adequate. This will solve that death wobble. |
Interestingly enough, whilst at a 4th of July party last weekend this topic came up...a friend who is a lifelong Ford guy showed up in a new 3/4 ton Denali, everyone was in disbelief but then he told the story of his 2019 F-250 'death wobbling' on I44 at speed, he thought he was going to die, traded the truck the next day.

I have a 2019 F-250 Lariat. I received a notice on my Ford Pass about extended coverage for the steering linkage damper. Maybe that has something to do with the death wobble. I've never experienced this in any of my many Ford vehicles.

I would guess this is solid axel dana 50/60 issues combined with track bar, ball joint wear, and most important steering stabilizer. Heavier tires help, 295x65x20. I put factory michlens on for a long trip 2000 miles and experienced it for first time around 45k. Have 104k now and never had it happen with cooper str pros.
last week pull the front passenger side U joint out of a 2013 super duty that was froze. Stopped taking grease and it created the death wobble for sure. I have felt that in an older 84 Chevy crew dual my and now know that was my issue then. Keep U joints greased and get a good steering stabilizer, and proper alignment as needed. |
Found the problem while it was on the lift getting duel stabilizers.
The track bar bracket was loose. It’s been a couple weeks now with no issues. |
No doubt that others have experienced this but I'll just share my own experience for additional data points.
2004 6.0 Excursion owned from 2010 - 2020 went from 76k to 230k miles. Only upgrade was Bilstien shocks (stock steering stabilizer) and never experienced Death Wobble -- only towed 5k boat/trailer and 7k car/equip trailer 2012 6.7 F350 owned from 2016-2021 went from 77k to 144k miles. No upgrades and never experienced Death Wobble -- towed 15k fifth wheel over 10k miles and 9k boat a few hundred miles. 2017 6.7 F350 owned from 2021-present went from 56k to 60k miles. No upgrades and never experienced Death Wobble -- towed 15k fifth wheel a couple hundred miles and 9k boat a few hundred miles. YMMV |

Looking into this trac bar for my 250. It's not cheap though. |
