88 Ford 1 Ton

A good friend of mine owns this truck and is looking to sell it. His dad bought it new in 88 for a family trip to pull a camper across the country and then used it lightly around town. It's been in the garage it's entire life, but was repainted about 10 years ago. Has the 460 in it, which I know is a dog. I love old stuff though and this thing looks like it's been in a time capsule. I could use it to pull my 27' and just a weekend cruiser. I've got a spot in the garage for it :) The only negative is it's a 2wd, but it's not something I'd be taking out in the mud or snow anyhow, so I suppose it's a moot point.

Not sure on pricing, but think I could get it for around 20k.

WOW!! They really took care of that one.

F-2 Speedy 02-04-2023 09:37 AM

That 460 isn't no dog, probably the best pulling gas engine Ford ever put in a truck back in the day,

ttuton 02-04-2023 10:23 AM

The 460 is one of the most durable engines ever made. It could really benefit from a cam swap as the stock cam is awful! This is an interesting read from Jon Kaase about the BBF. https://www.motortrend.com/how-to/ch...ons-jon-kaase/

540Fever 02-04-2023 11:08 AM

Appreciate the feedback. My buddy actually did a cam swap, springs, and lifters a couple years back. Gear vendors OD, headers and stainless exhaust.

I haven’t looked much into the 460 but he always said it was a dog - although he also had a 7 second race car so maybe not the best judge of power.

You aren’t kidding. Everything is outrageous, but this looks better financially than a newer truck. I appreciate the condition it’s in, really not sure what it’s even worth. They’re not as desirable as the previous generation. Property taxes will be low and sales tax will almost be nonexistent.

This would also give my half ton a rest and I could use it strictly for daily commuting and hauling around town.

compedgemarine 02-04-2023 01:30 PM

truth is if you found a decent truck like that you could not get it to that condition for less than 30k or more. paint is expensive, interior is expensive etc. the 460 is really just a slightly modified big chevy so they respond to mods like a big chevy and parts are everywhere for them so it is a good engine. like anything you can try to negotiate down some but that is a nice truck that the values have been climbing recently

540Fever 02-04-2023 07:09 PM

I talked with my buddy this evening… Felt him out in price and he gave me a range, 20k on the high side. I offered him 20k and he said well damn let me think about it lol

I get it, always harder to let go once it becomes real. I hope he decides to sell it, but I told him I wouldn’t let it go if it was mine. Plus the history with his dad who has since passed. Either he’ll keep it or I’ll own it, a win/win either way.

Wife gave me the thumbs up today as long as I promised I wouldn’t dump another 10k into it. Apparently she knows me well after 12 years.

bajaman 02-05-2023 05:52 AM

Wow...brings back some memories again...a buddy of mine had a white one, used it to pull a 32' horse trailer...definitely not a 'dog' lol. I don't remember his having the wood console, etc. As noted earlier, that thing is a time-capsule...simply outstanding.
It would be SO hard to let that go, what with the memories of the now-passed father and all. One wonders if there is a 3rd generation that might want "Grandpa's truck"?

Helmwurst 02-05-2023 07:07 AM

My dad had one of those, except his was just an extended cab. It was a standard trans though. When he passed, reverse gear was out of it. It was scheduled to be repaired when he went into the hospital. I took it out to the Leonard's trans shop a couple weeks after that and he repaired or replaced the tranny, not sure which, no charge. He always liked my dad and I had known him since first my First Communion in church. I sold the truck to the first looker and took part of the proceeds out to Lenny and thanked him for the generosity, he would not take the money. I donated his portion to the church's kids fund.

Nice Truck I say $20k all day long never knew a 2-wheel 1 ton drive could pull anything.

Zach F100 02-05-2023 08:57 AM

Much more character in these old trucks than new ones.

This is my 88 F150. Been in the family for 20+ years. I’ll probably never sell her.

😂 Easy easy! My half ton 2wd 6.2 does pretty darn good, but I’m always mindful of those back tires.

I’m impatiently waiting for a call from my buddy telling me to come pick it up.

liberator221 02-05-2023 03:51 PM

88 so is it fuel injected? That’s about when they changed. Looks like C-6/460. Both are very tuff and reliable. One post said they added an overdrive gear box. That’s a good move.

Jupiter Sunsation 02-06-2023 07:15 AM

The only thing with old trucks is they always seem to "need" something or you miss something the new trucks have as standard.

An acquaintance bought a 90's Suburban with 15K miles on it, sure its a time capsule but it's got 1/2 the HP of a new one, same amount of seats and still gets 16 mpg. He daily drives a new duramax 2500 so I have no idea why he felt the need to buy an old burban. I'm sure a rear main seal is dripping by now, they all seem to!

Hoodoo 2.0 02-06-2023 07:35 AM

The old stuff is nice to look at but a pain in the azz to drive compared to the new ones.

I had an 82 Ford Van that I put a 460 with D0VE heads, a little port work, cam, intake and a Holley, to pull my stock car. With the 24' enclosed trailer on, I could get light under the front tires on about the third bounce leaving the pits after the races. There was another For guy I raced with had a E-150 with a healthy Cleveland in it and we would race off the track with the vans as often as possible. I loved the 460

snapmorgan 02-06-2023 11:55 AM

We had some Fords of about that vintage when I worked at an RV dealership years ago. Here is what I can tell you about them. They get about 6mpg loaded or unloaded. Possibly better with the OD unit installed. The valve seats would sink in the heads fairly regularly. Driving one is about like herding cats, If you can keep it between the lines on the highway you were doing pretty good. Front tires last about 5000 miles.

The new trucks are so far superior, I personally wouldn't buy it with intentions of actually using it on a regular basis.

Wildman_grafix 02-06-2023 12:08 PM

Truth, I have a slightly modded 1996 7.3 oil burner, it's fine around town but go on a trip and 1 hour down the road you are hating life.

Cool if you can have one to play with but as a daily no. Kind of like when we all grew up with 60-70 muscle cars, it would suck to have one as a daily now.

It wouldn’t be my daily, just for towing and the occasional weekend truck. Now when I tow, it’s usually a 2-3 hour trip. Are they that bad or are we all just spoiled by modern trucks?

I thought about getting a newer truck and selling my half ton, but with prices, sales tax, property tax, and insurance all that stuff just bleeds money - mainly the taxes is what bothers me lol

Buy a 60k truck, $800 a year in property taxes, $3500 in sales tax, F that. I have the money to “afford” a new truck, but I’d rather just pay off one for 20k, pay $50 a year in taxes and $250 in sales tax. I have no problem spending money on boat parts however lol

It depends... "are they that bad"... I'm slightly biased towards GM products but I've owned Fords too. GM has had independent front suspension in trucks for 30 years now, so I think even the older ones are easier to live with and have better road manners than the I-beam Fords prior to 2005 I think. My tow vehicle is a 2002 Silverado with 8.1/Allison. It's old but it's paid for and it's actually a fun truck.

Why would a new truck raise your property taxes or do you have personal property tax in your state?

Yes, we have personal here. My 2012 GMC, wife’s 2014 Odyssey, and 1998 boat is $850. A new vehicle would double that. It’s not a ton, but factor it in over 4-6 years before values depreciate or in this market they’ve actually gone up. It just feels like wasted money. I have other areas I like to waste money 😆

ttuton 02-06-2023 06:26 PM

Can u find a way to register it in Illinois? Our plates are $150/year with no personal property taxes.

Zach F100 02-06-2023 07:41 PM

I quit buying the stickers. Cheeper to pay for the ticket.

Is that a 97? If you decide to get rid of it let me know. The rednecks down here pay top dollar for the 7.3's.

snapmorgan 02-07-2023 07:02 AM

I understand the whole sales tax and personal property tax thing, but I think there are alot better trucks out there for 20K than a 35 year old Ford. Anything can happen with a vehicle at any time, but I wouldn't want to trust my weekend/vacation/boating trip to a truck that old.

At the Mecum auction last month in Kissimmee the cheapest a 7.3 went for I think was 25K. Some mid 30's.

Nuts mine only has 155K on it, need to get rid of it I have no reason for 2 trucks.

F-2 Speedy 02-07-2023 09:46 AM

I can't get past the color..........:poopoo:

ICDEDPPL 02-07-2023 10:05 AM

Wait Illinois is cheaper on taxes than MO??
If I had to pay a tax on everythinig I own especially with business vans and trailers that would be a lot.

Beautiful truck, very clean, kind of a unicorn.
Sucks to drive plus 20K but man I think Id still want it..

TylerBurich 02-08-2023 07:06 AM

If you ever have to replace the heater core on that body style and it takes you longer than 10 minutes you are doing it wrong. Gotta love them for that. Played around with the efi 460's in the brick nose body style years ago and they have so much smog/emissions crap on them. A good set of cylinder heads and an aftermarket efi computer would do wonders but then you are so far from stock it isn't funny.

I just picked up this 97 w 5.0 and only 120K on the clock the other day. Had it gone through and all new plugs, wires all fluids and the lot. Pretty clean 2 owner. Not 4x4 but I already have 2 vehicles for that.
He is trying to sell me the jeep to. Actually, a Ford, early 60s Nam era. 24-volt system- supposedly so they could jump start Tanks. Totally rebuilt but not sure i need another jeep lol.
