Under Boat Trailer lights
Guys,
So what does a guy have to search for to find these "landing" lights that I see under trailers in all the kewl colors? Ideally, I'd like to find purple LEDs, but all I'm finding are white, red, green and blue. We are planning to redo the bunks on our trailer sometime this summer, and I wouldn't mind adding this to the project. Thanks. Brad. |

A RGB (red/green/blue) LED can create Purple.
You know, red and blue make purple. That would make sense, but I didn’t read in the description that they could mix colors. I thought they were just fixed as the designated colors. So…. Any recommendations? Thanks. Brad. |

You know, red and blue make purple. Nope. Every option I've found gives you a choice: Red, Blue, Green or White. No color mixing capabilities. Thanks. Brad. |

Really, that is strange most RGB's are changeable, all my outside landscape lights are.

But the radio buttons on the websites, forcing you to make a choice, beg to differ. And they are pretty consistent in that format. My guess/hope is that I am just not inputting the right search criteria. Is what you're talking about? Thanks. Brad. |
Try shopping for Rock Lights. They go on Jeeps, truck's etc. I put them in my bilge and they are great. Waterproof, metal cases.

These are mine. Need to go back & find where i bought them, but they are purple only & werent expensive. Didnt think i needed to get too fancy with RGB running a dedicated controller. just wired them to main trailer power box & put them on a dedicated switch.

Send a message to Myco trailers. They have multi-colored lights to bedazzle their trailers as an option. I'm sure they would be happy to source them for you or share where they got them.

Me personally, on a steel tube boat trailer, (if that's what yours is) I'd hate anything that involves drilling holes whether for screws or those 3/4" diameter marker light holes.
Like Then there are These that mount with double sided tape. There are all kinds of variations if you search on Ebay. You could always mount the ones you linked with tape also. Appears they already have it. Except for the wire hole. |

Appears they already have it. Except for the wire hole. Yup. It’s a Heritage trailer, 2X6” box tubing. I hear ya. And I’ve chewed on that a bit. But the frame rails are already open on both ends for wiring. I think I can get away with 5/8” holes for wire access and small drill and tap for mounting screws. I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t actually be compromising anything that isn’t already compromised. Thanks. Brad. |
Curious - towing with these on or just sitting? If towing, any issues with getting stopped? In VA you'd probably get a good talking to.
I do like the idea of lights on the inside of the trailer to light things up though. |
I've towed from pa to 1000 islands without any hassle, mine are wired with the lights, but I did add a quick disconnect just in case
these are Amazon 2 diode LEDs and are bright and have lasted over 4 years now https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...c14588b5cd.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...55d27ba834.jpg |

I believe they are illegal while driving in most/all states. Especially certain colors; red/ blue.
Personally I'm not a fan of them. |

Mine are most colors of the rainbow. They change or stay on one color. I will see what brand they are as I had someone install. The controller is in the box under the truck and pugs into trailer with a flat 4 plug. I did get pulled over once for the blue under the truck. PoPo said NoNo. said they shoot forward so NoGO. I said Yes Sir Mr PoPo and 2 miles down the road turned them back on. I was 0430 in the morning going to work. |

Brad. https://www.superbrightleds.com/vehi...d+color-Purple I wired mine so they dont turn on automatically. I bought a push button switch that i installed in one of the holes that comes in the wire harness junction box. Figured it was best to be able to control them separate in case its illegal to have them lit while on the highway. |
I bought a roll of blue LED strips i had planned to do on my trailer but now im thinking it will be way too bright having it the length of the trailer. I'll store those for something else and pick up some ones to space out. like the ones posted above!

IT's kind of funny, though, that the drawings they give you don't include the diameter of the hole that needs drilled for the grommet. One can assume that, since they are referred to as 3/4", and that would fall between two dimensions, on larger than and one smaller than the pertinent diameter on the grommet in the drawing, that this dimension would be 3/4", but it sure seems like that would be a handy detail to include on the drawing (this is the toolmaker in me coming out). Is this the correct assumption? A 3/4" hole? Did you just daisy chain them, as far as the wiring? I agree with the inclusion of a switch. Just in case.... Thanks. Brad. |
